Bitch bites 3 week old puppy

Bitch bites 3 week old puppy

I have a 3 year old mini poodle, she just had her first litter , 2. came out dead, one had heart problems, so there is one left.

And she keeps biting it on the head, no warning.

Also this happens when the puppy is waking up and moves her head, not while nursing, or while she is in any way making demands on mom.

I cut the puppys nails, the teeth have not come in.

Mom takes as much time as she wants away from the puppy, she gets short walks and plenty of one on human attention.

We have not been allowing visitors, and have not been handeling the puppy to much.

Any idea as to what is going on, or what we can do.

Please contact a vet right away. I'm not sure what could be wrong but just to be safe please seek veterinary help. I would also consider fixing the female. Any breeders out there on the community who can help? Again please call your vet and keep us posted.

Hi  there,, we had of course taken her to the vet, the vet was as puzzled as we were.

She lets her nurse, and cares for her and responds normally  to her cries.

How ever she seems to be very upset if the pup moves.

I have now started taking the pup out to put her on a surface where she can get good traction to move, and there she was just trying to figure out how those leg things work, and mom ATTACKS, out of the blue !

She has been given sedatives which we give her twice  a  day.

This behavior is happening less after the meds, but has not gone away.

I just find this very very odd, and was hoping some one had seen this before, and could tell me if something like this is something I ought to expect again if she has another litter.

Seems like this is a first time mother situation but due to two pups being born dead there could also be an underlying issue. Did you take the pup to the vet or just the mom?  I'll assume you took the pup too and the vet did examine the pup, listen to heart, breathing rate etc?

Regarding  breeding her again my first question would be why did you breed her this time? Not trying to be rude asking a serious question here. I breed, I breed for a reason. My asking is to find your reason to better suggest if I think you should breed her again and if this might happen again.

If the pup checked out as healthy, without "seeing" the behavior I'd most likely guess that she is considering the pup prey/play drive. Or depending on the age of the pup teaching it.

So much info not listed it is really hard to guess and advise.

    Hold old is the pup?

You should be handling the pup from day one, it is important for stimulation and socializing.

    Good reading!

I've raised a singleton puppy and believe me they are different from any "litter" of puppies. You must be more hands on if you want a well rounded socialized puppy into adult dog as they are not getting the interaction of the litter mates and the mother appropriately. Mothers correction is normal at a certain age which since you did not list how old the pup is I can't say I think it is normal.

I stated in the title, the puppy is 3 weeks old.

    I live in Iceland.

There are very, VERY few mini poodles here, and the "pure bred" (more like inbred) are available they go for the price of 250.000 to 280.000 kr  (2200-2500 USD)

So when I started looking for a allergy free dog for my family, well I followed the only shelter  website for over 8 months, no luck.   Then I started looking at puppies, she came to me after about 4 months of looking.

She is not a show dog, she is just a well rounded healthy dog with a very calm and positive demeanor . I have 6 people waiting for puppies from her.

    This was no accident :)

The dog was chosen and the timing planed out.

I know that in many places there are dogs up for addoption of all breeds, and it was our intention to get an adult dog that needed a forever home, apparently there just aren't any homeless hypo allergenic here.  Plenty of normal dogs, but my hubby has allergies so they just were not an option.

From what we can figure out, she does not like the puppy to walk !

She is now 4 weeks +5 days old, and is now first starting to walk, and that is only when we superwise, cause the bitch always tries to knock her over if they are alone !

Very odd, but this is what we think is going on.

    Any thoughts ?

I'm not sure what you're asking.  My only thought is that your bitch should not be bred again as she seems to have some temperament problems.  That is very often a trait passed on to future generations.
