Tree Sap!

    Tree Sap!

    Hi there,

How's the easiest way to get pine tree sap out of my mini schnauzer's fur?  I gave him a bath and it didn't budge.

Also, how can I get his hair as soft as possible?  I don't care about showing him, I just want a longish, soft-as-possible coat.

    Thanks!

HI!  I have a mini schnauzer too!  I read that you can use mayonaisse, but I used canola oil and it worked.  HTH!

I know peanut butter works when you get gum in your hair... do you think that would work on sap?

Rubbing alcohol is supposed to be the best for removing tree sap.

One of my Shih Tzu comes in the house with tree sap in his hair AT LEAST once every 2 weeks (we are cutting those #$%% Pine Trees down this Spring!)  I have two Tzus, and they ROLL in it[:@]

I actually use the margarine in the tub because it's soft and easier to scoop out.  Just rub it into the spot with the sap and work it through.  It works like a charm - and it makes them smell like a cookie!

I keep a tub in the fridge labeled with Willie's name on it.[;)]

Ooooh that's a good idea!  Wouldn't it make their fur greasy at all, though?

Keeping the fur clean and healthy will be your best bet on having good looking fur.  Also what you feed your dog will show through the coat.  Fish oil, flax seed oil, biotin and the such will really help produce a great looking shiny coat and good healthy skin.  Brushing a dog helps the natural oils in the skin spread through the fur.  There are some wonderful detangler shampoos that give the coat a great look.  If the coat is healthy then it will feel nice to the touch.  A dogs coat can only grow so long; you really can#%92t do much if you want the coat to become longer than what it can grow.  I often wish my smooth coated BC had a long BC coat but that is never going to happen but I still use high quality shampoos on her to keep her short coat nice.

Something else to consider is that soft fur isn't always the best fur to have.  Older dog with what seems to be "Puppy fur" often suffer from some serious health problems.  If they can not produce the harder outer coat then there may be something going on such as thyroid problems or the like.  Also some breeds are just softer than others so it may be purely based on genetics whether or not your dog has soft fur.

Ok, ok I know this thread is really old, but here's why I'm reviving it. I wanted to add that Crisco or shortening will also work. I used that last night on Kota's paw to get the sap off of his fur and paw pads. Then use some hand soap to wash out the greasy shortening.

So instead of starting a brand new thread to add that, I just added it to this one, since my search on sap removal came up with this thread. :D

I wish I had seen this last week!!! *face palm*  I picked at it on Sandy and used hot water to loosen it up. For the sap between her toes, I just cut it out. lol. I'll have to remember the rest of the tricks!
