    Bamboo brand nail clippers

I just bought these things from Petsmart to try and start clipping Star's nails myself.  Well, I clipped the first couple without much trouble but then on the next one, I squeezed the handle quickly for a clean clip and it got stuck in the closed position!  Not only that, but it didn't cut the nail =(  I looked at the blade after I manually opened the squeeze handle and noticed that it was no longer smooth, almost looked like a smooth blade looks after years of use.  Anyone else use these things? They appear to be junk!  Is there anything better out there?

Did you buy the double blade or the guillotine stye? I had no problem with the double blade style.

I didn't know there were different types, I bought what they had which was guillotine style.  I should probably just take it back.  The blade on it is a joke; after cutting just a few nails, the thing looks like it was used to try and cut through a steel bar haha

yikes! Yes, hope they take it back!

From what I understand, the double blade style is less painful for the dog, since it does more cutting than pinching ... the guillotine style apparently pinches more, and that's what cause pain to the dog. Unless, of course you cut the quick (see my post: eeks! bloody mess!http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=276680)

I hate guillotine clippers. HATE. HATE. HATE.

I'd definitely take them back, and get some plier-style clippers.

Well the funny thing is that she didn't mind the cutting at all! Wasn't expecting that.  She'd occasionally jump but it was just from the loud noise when it clipped.  I will check out your post...

    what is a dremel?
    • Gold Top Dog
A dremel is like... a mini electric sander. There's a wheel like thing on the end that spins really fast and is covered with a grindy surface. Basically you're sandpapering/filing the dog's nails down quickly instead of actually cutting them.

Good for you for having your pup be unafraid of the clippers!! Lots of treats and praise will make both your lives easier for a long time. (Adorable pup btw!)

Oh yeah she's a good little girl!  How long does this dremeling process take on one nail? It would seem like it'd take a long time to sand the nail down instead of cut it?  Is there a certain model number I should buy?

It's actually supposed to be really short. You don't want to leave the dremel on the nail for more than a few seconds or else it gets too hot. This website has great instructions:http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merensjp/doberdawn/dremel/dremel.html

I've never actually done it myself, but I've heard lots of people here raving about the results. I'm going out to Walmart to get one this weekend (apparently they have one that's around $20 that's highly recommended).

Do I need to buy any attachments or anything at Walmart or does it come with everything I need?

It'll come with what you need. Just get the cheapest, cordless one they have at Walmart. It's around $20. It's blue, and it's a 4.8 volt. It comes with a rechargeable battery. It's wonderful.

When you're dremeling, you either cut the nail, then dremel it smooth, or you dremel often enough that you don't have a lot of length to take off[;)]

I have the plier type and love them I notice that they dont lock up as easily as some others (guilotine style sucks!!)
I like to use a dremel too (like a tiny sanding machine) my dog is more tolerant of this then clipping (such a baby!!)
