    Steps taken when clipping dog?

I recently got some dog clippers and was thinking of grooming my dog myself.  What should be done when clipping him?  Should I brush him out first, give him a bath, dry him, clip him, bath him again, then dry him?

    thanks

No need to bathe him twice. Bathe him before you clip him. It'll be better on your blades.

Please don't try to clip your dog alone if you've never done it or seen it done. You could easily seriously injure your dog. Grooming is not half as easy as it looks or sounds.

I groom my own dog but I highly recommend you do LOTS of research first. Look up internet sights from cocker owners and breeders who give step by step instruction on how to groom a cocker, what supplies you'll need etc. A grooming video would also be a good idea IMO. Good luck!

Sorry I am late in seeing this...

I am considering beginning to groom my mom's Wheaten terrier as I will be babysitting her all summer. I found this wonderful book at my local library. It has the best descriptions for grooming dogs that I have ever read. The pictures are wonderful and it even has breeds you wouldn't typically think as needing groomed.

I didn't want to turn it back in when it was due, lol!!

I have trimmed a lot of horses and cattle over the years, as well as rabbits. It takes a while to get the feel of using trimmers and what exactly a pair of scissors will do when you cut hair. If you don't mind a few funny hair-do's and are very conscious of safety I think it's a wonderful idea. Just don't forget to know when to throw in the towel and take your cutie to the groomers!

What type of clippers did you get? Many clippers sold in pet stores are not sufficient to actually get the job done quickly and properly.

And those little cheapy ones wear out FAST, even on a thin coated dog. I bought a $30 grooming set, to use just at home. I clipped Emma maybe 5 times and the blade is SHOT. I just take her to work and use the real clippers on her now.
