"Pushing the Shots" at 4:31.  Remember as you watch that the American Animal Hospital Association Canine Vaccine Guidelines referenced in this news article show  distemper, parvo & hepatitis vaccines have a proven MINIMUM duration of immunity of 7 years by challenge and up to 15 years serologically.

The 2003 American Animal Hospital Association Canine Vaccine Guidelines http://www.leerburg.com/special_report.htm state on Page 18 that: “We now know that booster injections are of no value in dogs already immune, and immunity from distemper infection and vaccination lasts for a minimum of 7 years based on challenge studies and up to 15 years (a lifetime) based on antibody titer.”  They further state that hepatitis and parvovirus vaccines have been proven to protect for a minimum of 7 years by challenge and up to 9 and 10 years based on antibody count.

Canine parvo type 2, distemper, adeno type 1 and parainfluenza: "These results suggest that the duration of serological response induced by modified-live vaccines against CPV-2, CDV, CAV-1 and CPiV...vaccines, is beyond 18 months and may extend up to 9 years. Accordingly, these vaccines may be considered for use in extended revaccination interval protocols as recommended by current canine vaccine guidelines."  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23186088

How did you feel about the segment on dental health?  I thought the program was extremely one sided but that's TV reporting for you.  Here's another viewpoint for those interested.

Personally, I would not put my own dogs under general anesthesia unless it were absolutely essential.

Periodontal disease is a serious condition.  Routine dental care can involve periodic teeth cleaning and usually requires anesthesia. Many owners are unaware of the need to keep their pet's teeth clean by regular brushing.  Anesthesia is generally very safe and to make people fearful of a procedure because it requires anesthesia is irresponsible, in my opinion.

I don't think anyone likes to put their dog under general anesthesia without a good reason and to imply that anyone does is rather insulting.

We all have to make our own decisions but the 20/20 TV show is just more vet bashing, with no perspective, and may result in many people neglecting their pet's care because they fear being ripped off.

Having a relationship with your vet is vital.  If you feel you aren't getting good care or advice, change vets.  Ask questions.  There are bad vets out there but there are owners who don't bother to educate themselves at all or those that rely on the internet for medical advice rather than a professional.  Frankly, I'm tired of vets being accused of being money hungry.  They run a business.  If they don't make a profit, they go out of business.

Here's an interesting article from a vet's perspective.
