    What are the most important first aid products

    Hi - we're thinking of getting a dog. ANyone recommend what we should carry in the home for first aid.

    Lots of what you'd need are things you probably already have in your medicine cabinet.  I'll list some of the most common items I've needed for my dogs.  I'll surely forget some so maybe others will add to the list.

    Benadryl for insect stings and other allergic reactions.  The dosage for dogs is 1mg per lb of body weight.  

    Gauze bandages and tape for wounds.  Gauze in roll form is good for an emergency muzzle.

    Scissors.

    Iodine type wound cleaner.  I like Betadine.  

    Antibiotic cream or ointment such as Neosporin.

    Rectal thermometer. Normal temperature for dogs is 99 F to 102.5.

    Saline type eye wash.

    Hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting.  Never induce vomiting if a sharp object has been swallowed.  

    The phone number to your vet and the closest emergency clinic.  When in doubt, call the vet.  

    ETA the normal temperature range for dogs.
