    Smelly Doggie...

I am at my wits end.  I have tried several kinds of shampoo and things to make my chi/dachshund mix smell good but it only lasts for a real short while and then back to stinky pooch.  Does anyone else know of any products that give good LASTING results.  My mother says that it's just the breed of dog that he is and their sweat glands are different.  Another dilema I am having is keeping the fleas off him.  I was advised not to put a flea collar on him because of the type of dog that he is and being that he's only alittle over 2 months old but even shampooing him isn't doing the trick.  It is safe to use the frontline drops on a chi?  Thanks in advance for the help

What's the smell and where does it come from? Odors can occasionally signal infection.  The mroe likely problem is food.  What do you feed?  A healthy dog should only smell as bad as the dirt he's rolled in.  Once the dirt is off, regardless of the scent or lack thereof in the shampoo, there should be no significant odor.

As far as shampoo reccomendations, I personally like Pro Pet's 8 in 1 Apple Blossom Deoderizing Shampoo. My clients say it lasts maybe a week or a week and a half.
You could try some colognes too.

Any shampoo can get rid of fleas- you just have to make sure you are doing it right! You need to start at the top of the head, and work your way down (be careful not to get fleas in his eyes!) Don't use a flea-shampoo, you can use anything, just make sure to leave it on to sit for 15 minutes. Please stay away from flea collars of any kind- they can be very harmful, and become poisonous when wet. I would hold off on the frontline for a little while, but I don't know.

I agree what doggi said though- some things you need work from the inside out, it could be a food problem that relates to a skin problem.

I really didn't think of it as a possible food problem but I am currently feeding him Mighty Dog wet food and Purina puppy chow dry food. The smell isn't coming from one particular area just generally his whole body (I hope that makes sense).  What would be some suggestions on food to give him that is for a puppy and quite frankly not to be insensitive or anything but not to expensive.  thanks for the help I knew I would get great advice here.

When I was feeding Pedigree my dog STANK. But I switched to Eagle Pack and she doesn't smell at all, unless she's wet. She only gets a bath once a year.

Here are some awesome links (borrowed kindly from Sooner and Brenda) about dog food. Mighty dog and Puppy Chow are not very good foods, and may be causing his stinky problems. Stinky skin and stinky poops means that something on the inside is wrong.

As far as price goes, you'll be spending a little more on a better quality dog food, but you'll spend a lot less in vet care because of good nutrition. I currently have my dog on Natural Balance Duck and Potato- she has a lot of food allergies. It's about $10 for a 5 pound bag, but it lasts about a month. I think Chicken Soup for the dog lover's soul is one of the least pricey, but my dog reacted to it.

    Good Luck!

You really don't spend more on better food.  It costs more off the bat but it lasts sooo much longer because you feed less.

Good luck with your pup.  My puppies stink but thats cause its mucky outside and they roll in whatever they can find.  Brats.  At least they like to play in the shower now.

Sorry I have no answer for you, but there are some dogs who just smell bad when they get wet.  I had one mixed breed dog, about 10 pounds and her hair took forever to dry and had a really bad order.  I just used to lightly spray some light perfume away from her and that seemed to help.  I wouldn't think a chi's hair would be like that, but you never know.  I have a chi now and she is so easy to take care of compared to my yorkie, no grooming tricks or anything.  Anyway, like I said, sometimes it is nothing you do or the dog does so don't be too hard on yourself or him.  Good luck

My new rescue dog was feed Purina and when I got her she was quite stinky, itchy and had dull fur with lots of flaking.  One week on better food (Cal. Natural Lamb Meal and Rice and some homecooked) and she was looking great, nice and shiny and no flakes, and she had stopped stinking!

I personally feed raw, but Solid Gold, Innova, Timberwolf, Chicken Soup, Wellness just to name a few are premium foods, that while may cost you a couple of dimes more per pound, will make a difference in your dog overall well being.
Halo has a wonderful shampoo, is saponified oils of jojoba, eucalyptus, geranium, sage and others it is $11.00, but lasts a long time and since it does not have any chemicals is better on their skin. Good luck!!!

    1) For odor and creepy crawlys: Kelco Filty Animal. It smells very woodsy. It's super concentrated so you dilute with water and will last a long time. You can find it at dog.com

    http://www.dog.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=191075+401&Cat=

    2) Frontline is the way to go if you are having a severe flea issue. If it is bad enough your vet may do a special kind of dip. TALK TO YOUR VET ABOUT THE FLEA ISSUE, they are there to help, and can best determine the correct treatment for her age.

    3) The food change will make SUCH a big difference. A higher quality food will help with the odor and she will have a lovely coat as a result. The links that thedoc617 provided are wonderful. If you have any questions we are all here to help!

I'll bet my bottom dollar that it's the food causing your dog to stink. No offence baby chick but mighty dog and puppy chow are really, really poor foods, the toxins it contains will come out of the largest organ...the skin!

When a dog smells it's always a good idea to start from the inside out, especially if he still reeks after a bath,no amount of covering up on the outside will fix the actual problem going on on the inside.
