    shampoo for using often

Does anyone know of a shampoo that is ok to use every few days if desired?  I know that is not the norm of what should be done, but occasionally, my dogs seem to get smelly quicker and i like them clean.  Also, does a lot of exercize attribute to dog smell?  Mine always get plenty of exercize, but latly, i have been walking fast and far and they seem to smell like a dog[:o] afterwards.  They're shih tzus.. Thanks

Well, you could just rinse with water, no shampoo.  If you wash with soap too often that can create skin problems and make your problem even worse.

Dogs don't sweet like we do.  The smell is not coming from the exercise.  With Tzu's it can be passable to over exercise them.  They are meant to be lap dogs and couch potatoes so they don't need the extensive exercise a larger breed would need.  Also what you feed your dog can make your dog smell the way they do.  Not sure why but some foods, especialy the low grade foods, just have that smell.  A check up with the vet can help you understand where that smell is coming from, it may be a skin issue that needs more treatment then weekly shampooing.

I think for now a change in diet might make all the difference.

I've had allergy dogs I had to bathe EVERY day.  I usually use something super mild like Dr. Bronners (you can get it any any decent health store).  Lavender is my favorite for the pups -- and I dilute it WAY down before I use it.  Literally use lik e8 oz of water to maybe 10-15 DROPS of it and that will bathe the entire dog.    I dilute it before I even "use" it -- very mild and not drying.

But if you want to err on the safe-side, I mix tea tree oil and lavender oil (the essential oils -- not a conditioner with them, but the real 'oils' -- again a health store item).  Then I'd draw a dishpan full of water and while the dog is in the tub and still wet and warm, add maybe 15 drops of each  (lavender and tea tree oil ) or 30 drops of just one of them to the water.  Stand the dog in the water (2 feet at a time if need be) and pour it over and over and over them with a mug.  Let most of it run back into the dishpan -- just continue repeating until either all the water goes down the drain or gets cold.

GREAT for the skin and coat - won't let the coat dry from the frequent bathing and it's great to prevent yeast or staph.

I love Earthbath. It's all natural and extremely gentle. It's pretty much the only shampoo I use now and my dogs have never looked or felt better.

I like Pet Silk, but any gentle dog shampoo (ie, labeled for puppies) should be fine as long as you use a very small amount and rinse VERY throughly.

I second the Dr Bronner's suggestion. It's good stuff, and you can use it for anything (literally, you can clean the floor with it, use it for laundry soap, wash your hair, brush your teeth, use it for body wash, bathe the dogs, wash your car, clean the sink, and everything else imaginable). The bottle says 18:1. It doesn't lather up much, if you dilute it heavily, but it still works great. My dogs don't have long hair, but I do (and it's very thick). Diluted, like Callie suggested, it cleans my hair fine, without drying it out.

Thank you all very much,,, gonna get some of all of it[;)]  Whats kinda funny is i had also asked (then erased) about certain meats causing more smell.  When mine eat lamb, and venison, i think they smell more.  Their skin looks good, but they get a smell to them. Sooooo, with everythng else, i think i'll switch that off the rotation, and see if that does anything also.  AND [:)] i have a friend who sells the oils , and a great pet nutrition place so i can get the shampoo's, locally, so hopfully im set...gonna post about this shampoo i do have on another post and see if anyone has comments on it... Thanks a bunch!! jk

I bathe Trudy once a week with Solid Gold Shampoo and conditioner.

Be careful using tea tree oil.  It is toxic to cats, even in very, very small amounts.  So if you have cats and a dog, you will want to avoid using it if the cats *ever* rest/sleep where the dog has been.

If done the way I suggested it wouldn't leave a residue on anything -- it actually absorbs into the coat and you can't even smell it once the coat dries.

Being bred as a lap dog does not excuse under exercising or not at all.Taking dogs out for walks is much more than just the physical exercise, there is also the mental stimulation, socialisation and just to break up the day for them.Too many owners of small dogs use this as an excuse not to walk them I would say 2 good 30-45 minute off lead romps out of the yard everyday would suffice for a dog the size of a shihtzu.

JK simply exercising them would not make them smell, however stepping or rolling in stinky substances would[;)]. What are you feeding? If they arent rolling in anything, chances are it's coming from the inside, which shampoo/bathing will "cover up" but only for a short time

although my dog only gets a bath when he rolls in turkey poo or similar gross things.

edie, im a 'rotator'.  We home cook, feed meatie bones, kibble, caned and never seemed to have any problems/smell... The kibble that we were using was the natural balance veneson.  I realized that the TO veneson did the same thing and had posted it on the nutrition board long ago, and someone else had the same result.  Soooo, stoped that, have her on 'fish' based, and then back to more home cooken if that dosnt do the trick.  They're normally not smelly dogs, they do agility, and not smelled from all that exercize before, but though the muggy weather may have contributed to that ole "doggie" smell that i havnt smelt for a long while.  Thanks all, love all the input!!!

If you own Labs or hounds, they are supposed to have a naturally oily coat and you shouldn't strip the oils away repeatedly, especially if your dog will be in the water a lot.  The smell is oil, not sweat.  A good oatmeal shampoo made for dogs might do.  But, I would not use human products - they have a different Ph than the dog products do.  If you plan to bathe your dog often, use a mild shampoo - BioGroom makes one and you can get it here on dog.com.
