Pot Overdose or Neurological Episode?

    Pot Overdose or Neurological Episode?

I had to take Ribbon to the vet yesterday. The day started out just fine. I put Ribbon in the backyard around 6am and she seemed fine. When my son (23yr old) got up around 10am he asked if I had seen a couple bags of cookies he brought home from work (chef) the night before. Of course we both immediately thought of Ribbon and found the 2 zip lock bags in the backyard - empty. My son was concerned and thought Ribbon looked 'not well' stating there were a LOT of cookies. He said they had butter, sugar, coconut & hazelnuts. As I looked at her, her eyes seemed a bit off and she was a little shaky on her feet. I assumed she might have a belly ache so I got her to lie on her blanket on the couch and proceeded to keep an eye on her.  Thoughout the day I kept checking her gums and used a flashlight to check dilation which seemed fine. By mid afternoon I noticed she had released urine on her blanket. She was basically out of it until around 3pm when I decided I had better take her to the vet. One of my main concerns was a about a year ago she had had a very similar episode which ended up with a trip to the ER and a day at the vets on IV. It was never diagnosed and she was fine 24hrs. later.

Ribbon spent a few hours at the vet. Had an examination, blood work etc and was put on an IV. An hour on IV saw a marked improvement but the vet wanted her transferred to a clinic with a neurologist so she could be monitored overnight. At the clinic the Dr had suspicions that she may have ingested pot. I asked my son about the cookies but he said no. This morning the Dr called and again said, although they couldn't say for sure, the signs look very much like toxicity from marijuana. (I will be drilling my son again when he wakes up).

It's always possible that she got into some pot of the kids but the fact she had the same sort of episode a yr ago can't be ignored. They say she is much improved this morning - threw up, but they are keeping her for the day.

I hope Ribbon makes a full recovery.  How scary that this has happened twice and to not know the cause is the scariest.  Sending Ribbon and you lots of vibes.

I'm surprised there isn't a blood or urine test that could rule out marijuana or confirm it.

Maybe Pot was in the cookies? That would be my guess.  Hope your dog recovers well.

Ha! Ha! I was surprised to see my post. I wrote it this morning but got the "OOPS" message when I hit post.

I picked Ribbon up at 2. She has to stay quite for a few days. I have pretty much ruled out the pot. I know my son wouldn't lie about that. It's not like he's 12. I'm quite convinced it is tied to the first episode although the Dr at the referral clinic thought it was more likely a toxin. My vet also threw Addisons disease on the table as a 'chance'. I'll speak more with my own vet when Ribbon gets a few days rest.

    hazelnuts and not macadamia nuts?

It was found in the yard right?  Is it at all possible there was any spray or chemical in the area where Ribbon was?  (I've just seen 5 new cases of IMHA in the past week all tied to lawn chemicals).

We don't spray anything on our grass. My DH uses fertilizer but nothing yet for this year. Brrrr! We are on a corner lot so the dogs use a side yard with a picket fence. It would be very easy for someone the throw something nasty into the yard. I don't like to think anyone would but I guess you never know.

Just throwing stuff out -- of course I live in Floordaaaa -- land of the weird vegetation.  But there isn't anything *near* your yard that could be thrown in -- like something a kid would pick up (thinking "I'll throw him this to chase";)

what?  dunno -- but HERE, heck I've lived here for almost 30 years.  Granted I'm NOT Ms. Gardener (all thumbs are black and I've no desire to garden anyway).  Occassionally (rarely) I would see these things laying around that kinda looked like a green potato.  Silly me -- I never questioned it.

About 2 years ago Tink came in one night from the yard, and unusually she hadn't wanted to COME in.  I looked at her and her mouth was ... FOAMING -- no ... more like this long, stringy viscous ... yuck ... in her mouth.  what the heck??

She did NOT feel well.  She acted just pure weird.  David went out and brought in one of these weirdo potato looking things.  I had no clue.  Megan's (Pirate's Mom)  husband Bry is a major plant geek.  Called and talked to him and come to find out it's an "air potato" -- and yep, unless they are properly peeled and cooked they are sort of poisonous (apparently sweet but peppery to taste??).  The Indians used them as a food source.

The reason I only saw them sporadically -- they are a parasite -- the green part is a plant parasite that lives WAY HIGH (like over 50 feet high) in trees!!  and it was coming from a neighbor's tree (not mine).

Ok -- you're in Canada so it's not an airpotato -- BUT it would be worth looking around to see what's within a couple of blocks of your house to see if there was anything tempting.

I'd also ask the vet if there was anything that might be "similar" to pot.  I mean -- yea, I'm "that age" and I can remember kids trying to smoke oregano and all sorts of weird stuff.  Two kids (or teens) get to messing around and one takes something away and tosses it to the dog rather than let his friend have it.

I mean -- what would tobacco do? (I'm not a smoker -- I hope that wasn't a dumb question).  But if you can look for something similar.  I know there is some new "thing" out there that kids down here are smoking that is technically "legal" but is in fact a chemically enhanced stuff known as "Spice".

This from an article I found:

"Best known by the street names "Spice" or "K2," fake weed is an herbal mixture sprayed with chemicals that's meant to create a high similar to smoking marijuana, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Advertised as a "legal" alternative to weed, it's often sold as incense or potpourri and in most states, it's anything but legal."

It's dangerous stuff but kids are using lots of it because it's supposed to be legal and safe, but I'd bet the side effects would be fierce.  I can see one kid snatching it and hurling it away just to be a pain to another kid.

Wow hope she is feeling better and better and that you get an answer

I can tell you that in the states that have made medical marijuana legal there has been a rise in pot overdoses in dogs :(

The only reason I knew anything about that "spice" drug is because a friend of mine has a son who has been getting it.  (not a happy thing) -- please please Denise, don't think I was casting anything on your family -- but I'm hearing people argue about this loudly right out in public.  *sigh*
