puppy bath?

This is a totally goofy question, but how old does a puppy need to be before its first bath? At that point does it need a puppy shampoo, or would a nice organic simple ingredient oatmeal shampoo be OK?

I have bathed pups as young as two weeks old. Just need to make sure to keep them warm. I know this is going to sound really STRANGE, but I used Dawn dish detergent. It's very gentle, just make sure you don't get it in the face.
Be careful with some of the specialty shampoos, as they can have some "medicated" qualities. Tropiclean and Kenic make a great puppy shampoo.

I've also bathed puppies as young as two weeks. It was not normal circumstances, but I'm pretty sure that bath saved that puppy's life.

Anything with simple ingredients, without medication or pesticide is probably fine.

Tropiclean and Kenic make a great puppy shampoo.

I have the Kenic Oatmeal. I will go get some of their puppy shampoo too. Like I ever need an excuse to go shopping for puppy stuff. [sm=clapping hands smiley.gif] He'll be nine weeks old when he comes home, so I would imagine a wee bath would be OK. I think he'll even fit in my kitchen sink. [

9 weeks is definitely old enough. You don't need a special puppy shampoo, just something not medicated or for fleas. Like Kennel Keeper said, Dawn works very well.

Excellent! One time when June rolled in Fox poo I washed the offending spots with dawn b/c we were farm-sitting and that was all I could find. Sounds like a plan. I don't really even know that he needs a bath, but if he does by the time he gets here, I wanted to make sure he was old enough. Thanks!!

I just use whatever is around the house. I usually use puppy shampoo, but one time I tried using bleach and it got in gizmo's eyes...not good...[:-] My husband used Suave Shampoo on our other dog, Reilly and it works well. I would NOT recommend bleach though. [8|]

You can bath a puppy from 8 weeks on up using a mild puppy shampoo without harming them. [
