How often should nails be clipped?

How often should nails be clipped?

I've read from previous posts anywhere from weekly to every couple of months.  Is there a guideline or does it depend on the dog?  We take Boomer on walks daily so his nails I assume get somewhat of a 'filing' when walking on the sidewalk and ashphalt.

I do Lizzie's nails about every two weeks, but im constantly checking on her dew claws, because they get sharp quick. Im trying to take her nails back a bit so her feet look neater, so I do them often.

If your pup gets lots of hard terrain walking sometimes you wont even have to do them! We havent cut our Goldens nails in about a year and a half! [:o]

I just realized this but its been so long and weve never had to cut her nails since she was a pup, she does a good job of wearing them down. Wow, now I feel like a freak [:-]

It can be confusing as each dog is different. How I try to explain it is standing(relaxed) you do not want the nails to touch the ground. You can keep them shorter but its a good "no longer than this mark". As lizzie said keep in eye on dew claws as they will curl.

I would say a good rule of thumb is, check the every other week. If at that time they need clipping then you can do it, if not then check again in another 2 weeks. I prefer to clip *my* inside dogs nails every two weeks even if I just "snip the tip". This keeps the quicks shorter and allows you to clip the nails shorter when you do clip them. If you let the nails grow extremely long, then the quicks also grow out farther into the nail and it's hard to get them down to a manageable length.
Long nails can also cause pain and discomfort, so keeping them short helps with that.

I dremel Odie's nails whenever he clicks walking across the kitchen floor.  His dew claws rarely need it though.  I assume he chews them off although I have never seen him do it.

Beats me what he does, but his dew claws are almost alway short enough when I trim his nails.  Dunno what he does but I wish, while he was at it, he would just do all his nails.  [:)]

Seems to depend upon the dog, I know sighthounds nails grow like weeds. Trimming every one to two weeks is optimal. However, my mom's dogs barely have any growth (mixed breeds) after 4 weeks though. I get jealous, as I dremmel a every 2-3 weeks and my dog's nails always look overdue!

    I dremel Talus' toes too.....
I usually do it once a week....I think it depends on the dog...

I dremel toes a couple of times a week. If I let them go two weeks, I have to cut a good 1/2" off, even though they get a good walk almost every day. They're house dogs, though. Their walks are the only time they're on anything rough.

Ok sorry for this question but what is "dremel toes "?

Im curious about Deremeling (sp?) I know its practiced to get the nails back and lookin neat (Ive heard of Rottie and Dobie breeders doing it so the feet look nice and neat) but what would be the process and what would need to be done? Lizzie back feet look pretty nice but her front feet look way too long and I love that neat looking foot that some dogs have, when you can barely see the nail beneath the foot fur

Looks like something I used in shop class to smooth out the wooden plaque I made for my dad that said "DAD"

The amount you should do their nails, really depends on the dog.  I've seen some dogs able to get away without having their nails clipped or dremeled once every couple of weeks (or longer), but some who need it weekly.  Also if the dog does a lot of walking on concrete, that has a tendency to keep them filed down some (not always though).

My personal bias is to check weekly.  It helps keep the quick from growing, so you can keep them nice and short.
