    The shampoo review

I was recently given 1/2 gallon of Professional Pet Products Tar-ific Skin Relief Shampoo. Why was it given to me? It stinks. I decided to try it, anyways.

Friday night, I washed my mom's dog, Toby in it. It looks and smells like poop. This stuff is tar, sulphur, salicylic acid, and coat conditioners. No perfume. No smell goods. Nothing. Toby has no major skin issues. He has flea dermatitis and some seasonal allergies, mostly cleared up by good food, but he's itchy. Washed him up in this stuff, and he seems very relieved. His coat is soft, and feels very nice. He doesn't smell awful, but you don't wanna spend your time sniffing him, either

Today, I washed Emma. She hasn't broken out in a horrible rash yet, so that's a good sign. Emma has major skin issues, including skin allergies and chronic demodex. I can't tell yet if she's less itchy, b/c bathing her, in itself, relieves her itching.

The good things about it are that it seems to work. It does relieve the itchies, and it rinses easily. It's pretty inexpensive ($6 for 12 oz).

The not so good things are that it stinks, and you have to use a good bit. You're also supposed to soak the dog for 3-5 minutes, but if you have an itchy dog, you're probably used to soaking it.

I'll use it again. It's inexpensive, and it works. The smell could probably be fixed by a lavendar rinse when they're done, which would also help their skin....

The smell of some of those tar shampoos can kill you!

Hmm...the shampoo you mentioned is cheaper than the one Brett has to use. Think he'll be offended if I start buying him dog shampoo?[sm=lol.gif] He probably wouldn't notice until a week later anyway.

The ingredients that you mentioned in the shampoo that you're using are great for exfoliating the skin. Almost a must for crusty skin cocker spaniels.
That#%92s great that it#%92s helping with their itchy skin. [:D]
About the smell, you can always do a second wash with a professional oatmeal shampoo which is great for dogs with sensitive and itchy skin.
I always do a double shampoo on the dogs that I groom to make sure they're really clean......and rinse rinse rinse really good.

BTW you have very cute puppies.

    NO OATMEAL!!!

LOL My little JRT, Emma, has severe allergies. Oatmeal anything triggors major problems. Since I was trying the shampoo to see how it worked, by itself, they got washed in just that. Of course, I do two baths. Next time, they will either get washed in something that smells better, or they'll get a lavendar and tea tree rinse after they're cleaned and rinsed.

I use coal-tar shampoo myself. (Daisy and I are two peas in a pod- we both have horrible skin allergies.) Whatever you do, do not get it in their eyes! It burns worse than any shampoo I've ever had in MY eyes. It works great for Daisy when she had an allergy attack and it is great for dandruff for me.

We NEVER have de-greaser in the salon (my boss never remembers to order it) so instead we bathe the lake-ridden goldens, long coated yorkies, and greasy cocker ears with the tar shampoo and it works great for the buildup! We wash them again with something that smells a little better after that. It makes their coat very soft.

I only use tearless on their heads, to the ears. I worry about getting stuff in their eyes, a lot:) I'm a worrywart. Of course, if the dogs are so flea infested, you have to use a little flea shampoo on their face.....

Wow.....I had no idea that some dogs could have allergies to oatmeal. :( All these years I have been using oatmeal shampoo on dogs that had sensitive skin/allergies. I learn something new everyday. Thank you for the info on oatmeal shampoo.

Well, Emma is my "special" doggy, LOL.  She's got major allergies. From what I've read, though, oatmeal isn't the best, even if they aren't allergic to it. The oats want to soak up moisture and can make dry skin worse.

Are allergies common in JRT? I don't groom many. LOL There are a few rough coats that get a little hair cut.
Thanks again for the info on oatmeal shampoo too. What types of shampoos do you find works best for dogs like Emma?
    BTW, she is adorable!

I use Solid Gold's Supersen Gelle ($12/16 oz locally, $10 online). I haven't read any reviews on it, but it smells good and I like their dog food, heh. It's supposed to be for sensitive skin, which I imagine puppies have. Between the food and the shampoo, Link has a shiny coat and always receives compliments on the softness of his fur.

Emma is one of a kind, LOL. I haven't met any dog as sensitive as she is. She's a genetic train wreck, but.... Allergies are common in JRT. They often don't do well with frequent washings, and hypoallergenic shampoos seem to do well on their coat. Anything that won't strip their oils too bad is good.

Awww poor Emma......give her a big hug and kiss from us. [:)]

I'll have to order some of the Solid Gold shampoo. My boys have been eating Solid Gold for years. My Pug Gus eats the Mmillennia with a small amount of chicken and liver canned and I add MSM, seameal and flax seed oil to his food. I tried Timberwolf a few years ago but switched back to Solid Gold. Skeeter eats Wee Bits and our cat loves the canned blended tuna and Katz-n-Flocken.
    Thanks for you reply.

I use a all natural doggy soap bar from Canyon Meadow.

I also use a shampoo and detangler from Woof Cosmetics.
