    Red swellen eyes help.

Vinny's eyes have been itchy lately. He has scratched / rubbed hair off around them.

We do have a vet appointment . But the earliest we can get in is tomorrow.

Any ideas on how help them/ keep him more comfortable till then ?

I would really appreciate any help.

Genteal artificial tears will help a bit until you can in to the vet.  I get the Nighttime version.

Willy has chronic dry eye, so he is on drops constantly.  I use the Genteal 6 yimes per day - about every 2 hours.  Then he has 2 prescription meds.  And due to the dry eye, he often gets eye infections, and I get to add another prescription med to clear that up!

Thank you Freedom I appreciate  the suggestion. I put some in his eyes.

I have also tryed a warm cloth, cold compress and raspberry tea bags.

I am considering mittens so he cant scratch them so bad.

I wonder if a child's dose of Benadryl would give him some relief until you can get to the vet.  My friend gives her dog that for itching and licking problems she has due to seasonal allergies.   Poor Vinny!

Strange question -- is the rim of his lips abnormally pink?  Does he rub his eyes and then try to lick it off his paws?

Rather than *just* atopic allergies -- which it may be --  it could be contact allergies.  And the carpet may be the source and he got some on his face accidentally and now keeps trying to rub it off which is rubbing *more* on it.

Contact allergies for dogs can be huge -- often it causes sore, red skin at the contact site (which is often mouth, muzzle, eyes and paws).

They can be sensitive to a ton of topicals (like some humans) - things like some grasses (like St. Augustine Sod), night blooming jasmine, wandering jew, poison oak, and the typical human ones like poison ivy.

VERY often contact allergies are not direct contact, but 2d or 3rd contact -- meaning, someone walks thru an allergen, then they walk across their own floor and some of the oils stick, someone else walks across the floor in socks and pick u the oils - the dog simply snuggles that person's feet and "contact" is made.

Bathing often helps -- but you'll have to use cotton gloves or similar to wash the face.  You might want to use Baby Shampoo (Johnson & Johnson "no more tears"??) -- but you'll have to do something to remove the oil residue and protect him from further if that's what it winds up being.

If you can find Similisan "Pink" or "Irritated Eye Relief" (they've changed the name) -- they really help reduce the soreness

I didnt even think of that.

I will look up the dosage on line. I've used it on the other dogs. Vinny is quiet a bit smaller (14lbs) so I am not sure how much for him.

I also read cod liver oi can help.

You know Ive had experience with food allergies and my first thought was a contact allergy.

His lips look fine, but he does Does he rub his eyes and then try to lick it off his paws.

I have been using baby shampoo to clean his face. Its gradually gotten worse so I wasn’t sure how severe it was.

The only thing that has changed inside the house is we’ve been building fires. I have stopped using some cleaning products and dusting ,Vacuuming more often. One of my concern is it has something to do with the cats.I am trying to elimate some stuff.

Benedryl WILL help -- the proper dose is 1-2 mg per pound body weight.  The children's "elixer" is 12.5 mg per teas.   The typical OTC caplets are 25 mg.  Start with the 1 mg dose (and it needs to be given 2-3 times a day) and you can go up to the two if need be.  Keeping him from infecting his eyes is a big deal.

Typically a contact allergy is from something outside -- and in a case where it's only one or two body parts its often 2d or 3rd contact.  If his belly isn't sore -- it's not something where he lays.

It wouldn't be typical to see him allergic to cats -- are they new?  Now if it were Me I'd be looking just like him -- put me in a room with a cat and my eyes swell shut.  That's *not* a typical dog response tho.

You don't happen to have any wandering jew as an indoor houseplant do you?

The other soap that would be safe would be Dr. Bronners if you can get it from a healthstore.  DILUTE IT way down -- but put just a touch a baking soda in it (it's a marvelous grease-cutter and this is likely something oil-based)

Do you have an aloe plant or can you get one?  You can harvest the goo from inside the leaves and it is a MARVELOUS topical anti-inflammatory.  It will take much soreness out.

The other thing that would be good topically -- make up some chamomile tea *strong*.  Let it cool and soap a lint free towel in some and wipe the area.  Again it's an anti-inflammatory but it will soothe.

Puir wee babby!!!  (sorry -- channelling my inner Scots-woman LOL)

I will try the Benedry and Tea. I have those on hand. Hopefully the vet can help figure out what going on tomorrow.

Vet says its the wood fire place. The camomile tea and cod liver oil did wonders.

Interesting, and good news, as it isn't a permanent issue!
