    The importance of probiotics

About a month ago, the day after she had been to Purdue Veterinary Hospital for a recheck, Jessie started having very soft stool with a lot of mucus. I took a sample to my vet and no bacteria or parasites were found. My vet said it was probably caused by stress from being at Purdue and he suggested probiotics. I started her on FortiFlora and after a few days her stool was much better but I added it to her food daily for 2 weeks. There had been some changes in the color of her stool and how often she goes. Her stool used to be a greenish color at least half the time. I didn't know if that was normal but wasn't worried because it was firm. For years, she has passed stool three to four times a day. Since being on probiotics, her stool is brown all the time and she only goes about twice a day. This surprised me, and she's going to have probiotics a few times a week from now on.Big Smile

Despite the fact it's just made by Purina, Forti-Flora is a darned good probiotic!!

Switch around tho and give her a break from it periodically.  NOW GR-8-Dophilus is another good, easy one (that one doesn't have to be refrigerated).

I really like Forti-Flora -- it's has a bit of chlorophyl in it as well but can be really a good thing

(So says Aunt Callie who has been on Abx again for cellulitis for almost a month and who has NOT been taking her probiotics and I can tell *sigh* -- I'm preaching to the choir here! LOL)

Aw Callie; I'm sorry you're dealing with that again and hope it clears up soon; I know it's not fun.

After or I should say during Tootsies UTI this summer, the probiotic was a must with the abx. on board for 3+ months. Now that its over she still gets her probiotic 1x daily.

Poor Tootsie; that must have been a very stubborn UTI. I'm glad it's finally cleared up. In Jessie's case, she has had chronic pancreatitis for three years and I suspect that's why she had chronic green stool, and frequent stool. I wish I had known sooner that probiotics could make such a difference.

Tootsies stools also became less frequent also. Down from 4x a day to 2! Smile
