Charlie's eye surgery -- he's home (Callie)

    • Gold Top Dog

The other eye is becoming cloudy now -- which is apparently excess moisture in the eye.  He has an appt tomorrow afternoon that David will take him to.  He's also squinting a lot which is indicative something's not right.

My best hope is he has an appt with Dr. Demers on Tuesday -- that's the homeopath that does homotoxicology (it's not unlike stem cell stuff, except it uses a drop of his own blood rather than an embryo that is then used to make a DNA specific treatment/remedy for him.)  I've no doubt but what Dr. Demers can help me get this turned around.

Unfortunately it's all to easy for some professionals (whether computer IT people, doctors, vets, or appliance repair people) to say "Operator ERROR" is the cause -- when it's often not.  It's an easy way out to blame something like that, and yes -- a lot of people WILL screw up, but David and I are so "on" this it's not funny.  We've spent more time "talking about drops schedules" this weekend than we have just idle conversation.

Oh wait -- my Dad's in the hospital, there has been precious little "idle" conversation.  phew. *grin* But we have made the herculean effort every single day to spend time alone together-- that's the glue!!! Darned GOOD glue to hold "us" together in fact.

Just dropping by to check on Charlie's progress over the weekend.   Do we need to send you the 2x4 to take care of the "tech"?

Do we need to send you the 2x4 to take care of the "tech"?

I'm going to seal her in a bag of beef heart and leave her in the refrigerator case at the grocery store (it's my 2012 version of Edgar Allen Poe's "Telltale Heart"  renamed "LowFat Heart";)

*rolling eyes*  David is taking the appointment today at 4:15.  Both of Charlie's eyes are cloudy now.  Between us we devised a whole list of questions for him to take with him AND some written stuff about diet that he's got to back up what we're doing.

In short - I won't know nuffing until David gets back from the vet.

My heart breaks for this dog -- we were trying SO hard to do something wonderful for him -- and I **HOPE** it heals and he's able to enjoy it.  But as I've said before -- we did NOT know we were doing something that would be SO hard on him.

Have an appt with Dr. Demers (my vet homeopath -- this guy teaches all over the US and Canada) tomorrow at 6:30 for Charlie and Tink.  I CAN NOT WAIT -- he'll get him on the right path!!

Well, if my time zone calculations are correct, David and Charlie should be getting in to see the vet right now.  All my fingers and toes are crossed that the visit goes well -- no hassles about food -- and that some promising info and/or treatment is given that will help some real healing begin.

I'm sorry he's having these complications . . . my heart breaks for the poor little guy, too.  Sending a huge batch of good vibes out to Florida right now!

    • Gold Top Dog

I know you guys are doing all that you can for him, I just want to give him big smooches.   I will be anxious to hear Dr Demers opinion.   You have such a good relationship with the Drs. you take all the others to, it's a shame that there seems to be a problem with this Vet's ability to communicate.

The visit this afternoon was with the surgeon who did the actual surgery.  The stuff noted from Friday (he actually had blisters forming in his eyes -- hence the NaCl 5% ointment) is BETTER.

The little blisters are GONE -- there is some cloudiness and that may remain for a while (it may never completely go away) and the cloudiness in the other eye is almost negligible.

At this point he's healing well.

If I knew HTML I'd make this blink and in big letters -- I can do the letters tho

The cholesterol and triglycerides the other vet was so worried about are:

BANG IN THE MIDDLE OF NORMAL!!!!

(Ouch -- excuse me, I think I just dislocated my shoulder patting myself on the back!!!.

They've reduced several things -- he is on oral pred wean off -- a slow wean-off which suits me fine (I've got LOTS of milk thistle!!  -- those of you who know me are saying "Yeah, I just bet she does!).

We won't have to come home at lunch -- we can fit the pred drops in around work.  (they've reduced them to 4X rather than 6) and they've discontinued the antibiotic orally and the drops will be gone by morning, not to be refilled.

Part of the problem was we had THREE vets here -- the one who did the surgery wasn't giving me the flak about the diet the other two were, and it really was this one little weenie of a tech who was ramping these vets up before they came in to see me.   The girl obviously believes everything the Science Diet rep tells her.  (and this place doesn't even sell food!  You can tell this is some indoctrination she's gotten somewhere previously).

Now Dr. Demers can help me get him truly healed and sharpen the vision.

So it's ALL good news on that front!! Rah!!

Now, that's the kind of update we love around here. Charlie, I'm sooooooo glad you're healing so well. Yeah!!! It was a complex surgery and it's just taking longer to heal than any of us wanted--you especially, Callie. Hugs and hoorays!

    • Gold Top Dog

Yay Charlie, pretty soon you'll be able to see your loving mother!

I just honestly wish she had been a bit more realistic about how difficult this would be since the cataracts were so "hyper-mature".  It honestly was out of my realm of knowledge that the older they were the more dangerous and harsh the surgery would be.  It may not be something they do often -- but it would have been better if they had painted a worst case scenario for us JUST so we could prepare for it.

I'm just really blessed that I have a husband who is as "into" this stuff as David is -- this was difficult but he just plain dove in and we worked together all the way, and I know what an incredibly wonderful thing that is.  typically I do the meds and he does any physical stuff -- but this required a lot of us, and it wound up making me feel really valued that he realized this needed to be shared.  I'm a pretty fortunate woman in so many, many ways.

Awesome news! You guys and Charlie are really amazing.

Well, that's a great update to read to wrap up my day!  I was hoping you'd have good news after today's vet visit.  And I think I can see the bruises on your tongue from 3,000 miles away from when you were biting it, trying to keep from yelling, "I told you so!" when you saw that bloodwork!  Wink

I hope you see a real turn in Charlie's overall progress now that the meds will be weaning down (and he'll have to withstand fewer drops per day).  I'm sure he's not feeling super good in his whole body, not just his eyes, after all this ordeal!  Give him some gentle ear rubs from me.

You and David are shoe-ins for Dog Parents of the Year award!

So glad Charlie has turned the 'corner' so to speak. Mega healing vibes from all of us...

Yea Charlie!  So happy to hear that some progress is being made.   Callie I would have loved to be a fly on the wall at the Vet's office yesterday Wink

Cant wait to see what Dr Demers does today.  I am so glad you got to see the surgeon yesterday you sound more positive about Charlie's recovery.

And dang, here I just thot my coffee was too hot this morning!  rotfl

I only wish Demers did chiropractic (Dr. DiNatale does but Charlie doesn't see her for two weeks) cos lugging that cone around is NO fun.

They ALMOST told us to leave it off him, but until we see NO attempt at all to scratch I'm not risking it and he handles it well.  It makes me laugh -- if he catches it on something he YANKS his head the other direction, almost like "Oh STOP -- quit grabbing at ME!" and keeps on going.

But David and I were able to divide this up last night so neither of us has to come home at lunch time -- which is HUGE.
