    What Should I Do?

Hi guys. So, of course this has to happen on a Sunday when the vet is closed!

Gotti had a small growth/skin tag removed from his knee area on Friday. It needed 2 stitches. We have kept him pretty calm all weekend, no walks, etc, but this morning he was feeling good and stretching and rolling on our bed and I guess due to where the stitches were, he pulled the cut open. There was a little blood, but not much now and he's just resting, not moving or licking it right now. But, it is definitely open.

Do you think this will be ok until tomorrow when I can call the vet? Should I try to cover it, or keep the air on it? Should I put something on the cut, or just keep it clean? He is on antibiotics.

    Thanks - Cathy   Smile

I would keep it clean, use a small layer of simple antibiotic ointment , like Neosporin. Some folks may advise you close it with super glue, as that was a very common way to handle wound care in larger kennels. However it is no longer a good idea since you may trap bacteria or foreign matter inside the excision site and an infection will build rapidly. Using tape and gauze may be a problem if it draws the dog's attention to the area.  A small open wound can actually be managed with little effort. Things to watch for, excessive washing of the area, which can cause increased soreness, irritation and even increase the size of the opening.  Any drainage, from bleeding to the leaking of serum , the clear to yellow dischagre that can have hints of blood in it is actually from the wound area begining to heal. It may look alarming but is a natural part of the healing process. Bleeding on the other hand means the wound is being stressed.  If his gait changes and he begins to limp or favor the leg in question, that could indicate inflamation of the joint which can happen if infection enters the joint from the wound via it's blood source. With only 24 hours to worry about , I'd keep the dog mellow and chill with him as much as possible with him.  Allowing me to keep an eye on things with out hovering.  Going outside would be on leash only. Make sure he has pleanty of fluids available.  Should the wound area become dirty just rinse it with warm water, pat dry.  I'm sure he will be fine, but you area wonderful "Mom" to worry about him.

No background to offer help.  Just want to let you know I am sorry this happened, prayers for continued healing.

Of course this happens on a Sunday!  Just be glad it is not a 3 day weekend - that is often how it goes!
