    Hello,,

    I have a 6 yr old Greater Swiss Mountain dog who has Mass Cell tumor .. Going to have his ear removed tomorrow 10-31-11

    Does anyone have a good cancer diet that he can go on???

    A cancer diet simply doesn't have carbs for the most part.  Are you looking for a homecooked diet or commercial?

     If you want to email me I've got both a really elementary cancer diet (it's not wonderful but it will get you started) AND a really good primer list of anti-oxidants, and herbs that can be super helpful.

     The vet should do a HUGE dose of benedryl before he begins - and may want you to continue it for a while (mast cell is a "histamine" tumor - it is sort of allergy-related)

    Is the mast cell in the ear canal?

     Welcome to the forum, though I wish you had found us under happier circumstances. Sorry that your boy is losing an ear. Here are 2 cancer diets;

    Integrative Treatment of Canine Cancer

    Diet

     The second link has a cooked diet formulated by Dr. Olgilvie, who also formulated canned n/d, which is Hill's cancer diet. You do need some carbs, but the right kind. From the second link;

    Cancer cells feed on sugar. We are attempting to starve those cells.

    Complex sugars, which are also called complex carbohydrates, supply muscle energy. Some examples of complex sugars include breads, cereals, grains, rice, potatoes, vegetables, fruits and pasta.

      In an interview with Monica Segal, Dr. Olgilvie said brown rice is better that white rice for the diet. Note that the type of fat is very important; you need to add lots of fish oil.

      I hope that this is only a stage one or stage two mast cell tumor, and that your pup goes through the surgery well. Keep us posted;{{{hugs}}}

    Sorry to say, Roy's MC Tumor is a grade 3.. It has not gone to any of his other organs at this time.. This is why I want to start him on a cancer diet right away.. I do feed Grain free kibble..(Taste of the Wild),

    His right ear and right lymph node will be removed today (10-31-11).. Very sad day for me..

    I will keep everyone posted on his recovery...

    When my cocker had a spindle cell tumor removed, I gave him Essiac tea (by mixing it in his food) for about 6 mos afterward.  Also fed a cancer diet, with lots of salmon.  He was lucky - the cancer did not return.  The link to Essiac tea is here:  http://essiacproducts.com/essiacforpets?gclid=COP7rK2Qk6wCFekaQgod6jBupQ

    Good luck with Roy - hope the surgery is completely successful.

    Toni -- Grade 3 is NOT bad.

    ALL OF US have Grade 1 mast cell in our bodies -- it is **NORMAL**.  We all have mast cell (all mammals) -- and Grade 2 is the lowest grade of malignancy, so Grade 3 is JUST one step up.  Vets never explain that.  It's WAY better than Grade 4.

    Are you going to do any chemo or anything?  There is actually a TON you can do.  I would encourage you, specifically, to have him see a TCVM vet ***IN ADDITION*** to whatever your regular vet is doing.  The Chinese herbals can greatly augment any other type of care, and they absolutely rock at helping the mast cell not recur and spread.  http://www.tcvm.com -- there is a locator on the left.  I'm more than willing to help you in any way I can.

     Jan's diets are better than anything I have, but I will send you Dr. Clemmon's list of anti-oxidants and herbs (essiac tea is just one of several that can be SUPER helpful).

      One of the links I posted is for Dr. Clemmon's cancer diet and supplements he suggests. He has a very comprehensive webpage for treating cancer.

    His diet is kinda ... odd *smile* but that list of supplements, etc. is INCREDIBLE.

    It was Dr C who told me about maitake mushroom -- and that's an INCREDIBLE help (that word again).  Maitake helps protect healthy cells from invasion by cancer ... and it's a polysaccharide which means, if you are doing chemo it actually augments the chemo.  Even if your vet isn't holistically inclinded -- if you tell the maitake is a polysaccharide they'll be thrilled about it.

     Toni; How was the surgery; hope your guy is doing okay.

    Checking in, too, to see how the surgery went. Sending good thoughts.

    I'm hoping the surgery went well.  I'm glad you found us even under stressful conditions.  Looking forward to an update; and to learn more about your boy.  Smile
