Pan's skin?

    Pan's skin?

Pan had his first SV show this past weekend so a few days before I took all the dogs to the self-wash station at the pet store.  I like using the blow dryer because it gives me the chance to carefully inspect everyone for wounds, ticks, hotspots, etc.  I noticed on Pan's underside in his "armpit" areas (forearms and thigh area) the skin is sort of reddish or purplish in some places.  It wasn't open or crusty and I've never seen him itching these areas but is this not a sign of allergies or should I not worry if he's not itching?  I've never had a dog with allergies.  Pan eats California Natural Lamb and Rice which is an limited ingredient diet, and he gets a few pumps of salmon oil on his 5 o'clock meal to keep his coat shiny.  His coat is very nice and he doesn't smell.  The shampoo I use at the pet store says "antiseborrheic" so I'm guessing that means it's OK for sensitive skin.  None of the dogs have had any itchies or overly dry skin from their baths.

Keep an eye on it to see if the redness goes away.  Its a good sign that he's not scratching it or seems to be bothered by it.  Likely an allergy of some kind if you've noticed normal skin color in those areas in the past.

I'd say more likely yeast -- *maybe* caused by allergies.  Could be simply staph.  Allergies don't always itch -- in fact, often they don't.  It's just that on dogs allergy reaction comes out ON the skin rather than the runny nose, red eyes we humans get.

You may read some stuff online about using Gold Bond Powder - **DO NOT DO THAT** -- it's the fast way to renal failure in a dog.  At one point in time it was a really popular thing put out for goldens and shepherds and you can still find some stuff out there about that so I figured it was a good warning.

Should I rub some antifungal cream on it?  I think we have some OTC stuff b/c DH got ringworm on his chest when working with under-privileged children a while back.

Does he wear any sort of harness that might rub there? It could be just a friction type deal. I'd give it a few days then re check before I did anything.

Nope he's nekkid.  Especially lately because of preparing for the show.  If he wears anything at all it's just collars.  He did just start marking though so he's been rubbing and mucking around in all sorts of taller plants trying to practice, lol.

Good thot from Gina as well.  I typically don't do much with "cream" topicals (they can gunk up the fur and sort of exacerbate things if anything *is* going to rub there).  However, if it were me, I'd probably use a bit of tea tree oil (not a cream or lotion with tea tree *in* it but the actual essential oil).  Be minimal (and you don't want them licking a ton of it) but it's the best anti-fungal that won't gunk up fur that I know of.  Typically you can get a bottle of Tea tree at Wal-Mart for under $5.

Human antifungals can be harsh stuff (and can also zoom straight to the liver from the skin) that can cause their own sort of irritation.

I do like using tea tree oil...great stuff.  Check to make sure it won't irritate him though.  If he has sensitive skin...it might (maybe not) sting slightly.  Just put a teeny bit on the area to test first.

You can, if you ever need to, dilute tea tree with olive oil.  Works fine and it's good for the skin.

Is it possible to be irritated by salmon oil?  I always thought it was *good* for skin.  I don't think it's food because he has always eaten this food with no problem and it's a food generally used by people with allergy dogs.  The only real major change is I started the salmon oil a few weeks ago.  However our Schutzhund field is kind of overgrown right now so maybe doing long downs he is getting irritated by the wildflowers and bugs.

I lied.  On closer inspection today his skin DOES have some flaky scabs on his inner thigh (like right near his testicles) and way up in his front "armpits".  I kind of picked at it and it very easily flaked off sort of like dry skin but a bit thicker.  He didn't seem to care and showed no interest in licking or scratching those areas.  I'm not sure if that is new or I just missed it before.  I guess I'll keep a close eye on it and see what happens.  We have had some major weather changes here (rained all week and was cold, then got colder below freezing, then warmed up again and was in the 70s today but dry).

Lies;  salmon oil shouldn't make him itch unless he's very sensitive to fish. There shouldn't be any protein in the oil, or only a trace amount. It's a good thing to add IMO because California Natural Lamb and Rice has very little omega 3.

The scabs you found near the testicles are from chewing; Jessie had the same type of scabs in the same area when she had a bad allergy flare up in July. The scabs in the armpit are from scratching. You could try an antihistamine; the salmon oil helps antihistamines work better. There are shampoos that are made for soothing the skin of dogs with allergies; I use Allermyl; you can get it online; vets usually carry it too.
