    Itchy, flaky ears :(

I'm new to this message board. My 2 year old pugs ears have been flaky and it seems like the color is different in the inside. Not really sure how to describe it. Almost like a redish, purplish color. I do see him scratch them from time to time. It doesn't seem to bother him that much, but when he does he reeeally scratches for a time minutes and he whines a little. I also noticed my other dog will clean his ears a lot like he senses something. Any idea's to what it could be?

Sounds like it *could* be mites.  However, anytime there is an ear issue, you really have to get to the vet and find out what's up.  Repeated ear issues can cause the bone to calcify and for a surgery to be done to completely remove the ear canal.  Not a pleasant surgery, so as you can see ears are nothing to mess with.

    Welcome to the forum.

My guess is it's a yeast infection, or the beginnings of one.  Ditto the recommendation for a vet check.

those little puggie rose petal ears can get REAL sore real easy -- because it folds SO close to the head that it traps moisture.  So you can get a yeast ear infection fast, but at the same time it can also trap bacteria majorly easy as well.

So honeslty -- vet **soon** before it's worse.  Ear mites look like coffee grounds in the ears.  But a waxy residue can mean either yeast or bacterial infection and honestly if you don't feel like you **know** (beyond a shadow of a doubt) whether it is or isn't yeast or bacteria then you truly need a vet to look at it.

My pug runs ear infections super easy -- and her ears will actually sometimes feel hot to the touch before you can see or smell anything.  But I've learned to react pretty fast and I keep Zymox on hand to help maintain the ears.

Thanks guys, i just wanted to know what i was up for. I took him to the vet on the 11th. Turns out it was yeast growing. He has also been having these episodes where i thought were small seizures and described them to our vet and she told me to look on youtube and search for one similar and we would go from there.  i found one immediately. I noticed his are only when he is startled from sleeping and they only last between 30 sec to 1 min but it's enough to scare the crap out of me :( Hate seeing him like that, breaks my heart. His are also very small compared to a lot i've seen. http://youtu.be/t--BdHy6E6g

Glad you got the yeast diagnosed.  As to the seizures, please email me -- I've dealt with this more than once and there are many things you can do to help the seizures.  I've seen acupuncture and herbals do *incredible* things -- sometimes you can avoid the drugs all together.
