If he's still having cow pie poops I would fast him for 12 hours...then your bland diet for a couple of days.

    Feel better Bugsy!

well we were up at 4 ................ I didn't give him an immodium last night and by about 3 I could hear his gut going, shudders

went to the vet and they gave him the metronidazole feeling confident it would clear him up. Poor B MAY have a bacterial infection near the wound site (I thought it was a bug bite) so fingers crossed we kick that as I made it clear we won't be using the clindamycin again!

If he isn't cleared up by Monday they'll do the fecal

Oh, Bugsy! I sure hope you start to really feel better soon. Did you steal any kitchen towels today????  ((((hugs))))

Poor Bugsy;  Is there something topical that you can use for the bacterial infection, like Panacure?  I hope the metronidazole settles his gut. (((hugs)))

No worries Kate we had serial towel stealing (and throwing), shoe stealing, toy destroying, and a real bunny chase :)

even the vet & tech were stunned at how happy he always is regardless of what he feels like or what they do to him. Just one of the many reasons I love him so!

his gut already sounds a bit better, he ate at 5 so I should start to hear it by 9-10 if it is still so bad. I've got him on a strong pro-biotic too.

Janice I have no experience with Panacur where would I get it or is it prescription? For now I am just putting neosporin on it which may not help but I can't see how it will hurt. It is just a small bump similar in size to a bug bite so as I said I am hoping that his gut settles, which will allow him to sleep properly and retain nutrients, and the bathroom will be pretty much finished tomorrow so no more workmen all day going in and out a million times will combine to get his infection fighting power restored!

I thought panacur was a wormer? Maybr i am remembering wrong. I used to use metronidazole on dakota a lot and it helped. There is a stronger drug that dies the same plus an antibiotic that we used too. Can't remember the name. Started with an a......i know that doesnt help lol

Panacur is a wormer, it treats roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and Taenia tapeworms.

The Metronidazole (aka Flagyl) is a first line treatment for lots of bacterial and protoezan infection (giardia, coccidia, clostridium).

What you are seeing now as far as his liquid diahrea might be a result of stress and have nothing to do with the bug bite. Stress from the operation, stress from the recovery, stress from the work done in the house. They do not express stress like you or I. If they are carriers of any nasties that stay undercover in normal times (and most are) , a period of disturbance in the normal way of life lets those underlying things flare up and cause tummy trouble. Spip had two bouts of coccidia in her life, both following a stress period (first long time boarding, getting Flem who was herself infected from the dam); Flem had coccidia as a pup and never again but she does not sress easily.

Those workmen being out of your house are going to make a big difference. Anyway, you are covered with the metronidazole if things do not quiet down on their own.

Good thoughts for Bugsy Boy and to you. You both need some non-eventful time.

Willow has had so many of these types of flare ups, I cannot even count how many.  I usually will fast her for the day and give her a childs dose of Immodium to stop the diarrhea.  My vet is not a fan of me giving her Immodium but sometimes I don't have a choice-we have to go to work.

If she's still having diarrhea the next day I have a supply of Metro on hand now to use-yes, thats how often this happens.  And, I also have Carafate too.  And, a large supply of various strength anti nausea meds.

Usually, the Metro will make her feel better in a matter of hours.  So, I'm sure Bugs is going to be feeling much better soon too.

It could be any number of things causing this.  As long as I know she didn't get anything new to eat, I don't try to figure it out anymore.

Hope Bugs gets better quickly for you!

Good gosh Lori I am so sorry that Willow struggles so. The metro has definitely helped already, mostly it has him feeling well enough to sleep. This is huge as we all know if you can't sleep you can't heal.

He had a slightly less liquid poo (more cow pie than water) this morning but plenty of fresh blood in it Sad This is common with colitis because they keep straining to go even though they are empty - the inflammation and irritation give them the sensation they need to go so they keep pushing.

The stress of the bathroom work MAY be a factor but the main factor was the clindamycin which has allowed an overgrowth of clostridium.  We never got solid poo after the first couple of days on the clindamycin. So three weeks of diarrhea/soft serve have led to the bleeding, inflammation and full on colitis.

He is remarkably calm when we have work on the house, once it starts and he is sequestered away he settles - no it isn't completely without stress because once they leave and we take down the barriers he is happy and playful but he doesn't react to them in and out or even get up to see who it is. He just seems to resign himself to the chaos and noise

As for the likely bacterial skin infection I was just using a bug bite as a reference for size - I initially thought it was a bite as it is in the shaved area and we have a zillion mosquitoes but the vet feels it may be a bacterial skin infection so we are just keeping an eye on it.  I did put neosporin on it but I'm unsure that has any effect.

Lastly thank you all for your thoughts, concerns and vibes.  It is always remarkable to me how Bugsy and dogs in general just get on with it.  He hasn't indicated at all that its a problem or an issue, I don't think any human going through all of this would be so tolerant.  Even the surgery was like, "ah well so I have a chunk out of my butt and some staples, big deal can I go for a run now?"

He deserves to heal up and feel great now!

Yes, he really does deserve a break, though like most dogs, he just deals with what life hands him and doesn't worry like us humans do. :)  I'm glad to read that he slept better and hopefully that means that you did too.  Continued healing vibes for him.

I hope Bugs-a-duke is on the mend.

Good to hear you're feeling better and able to rest now Bugsy!  When Tessy had the squirts i used a product called Progut which was a paste that supposedly coats the lower GI to promote healing and stop bleeding.  Just squeeze a little on bread and give to them.  The active ingrediant is Montmorilonite (sp?).  Might be worth looking into if the metro doesn't totally clear it up.  It worked really well for Tessy!

    Give him hugs for me!

Lol Johnny he said he tugs or wrestles with guys and on rare occasions allows a female or child to hug him.

he has slept most of the day, peacefully and deeply, and is now driving us nuts, this is a good thing. Earlier he had a more formed poo that was still a seriously weird color but I didn't see much blood so that was good

I thought panacur was a wormer?

You're probably right. My vet has prescribed a generic version of a topical ointment that is a combination of antibiotics and steroids. It's Pana-something; maybe Panalog? The generic is called Animax and it really helped when Jessie had a nasty infection under her foot pad.

Glad his poo is improving a little. Poor Bugs; Jessie had colitis for a few days but it never was bad enough to have blood in the stool. Give him some lovin' for me.

Glad to see the medicine is working and things are firming up a bit. Hopefully, we'll be able to do the happy poo dance pretty soon.
