my 2 year old baby girl was diagnosed with IMHA 5 days ago...

Hello. I have been searching for any and all information on IMHA since I found out about Marilyn's diagnosis on 7/17/11. I brought her into the E-vet because she was acting very lethargic and wouldn't eat for days. When I got there she had a PCV of 11%. They immediately admitted her and put her on medications and fluids. She has now been in the hospital for 5 days and had 3 blood transfusions. Her PCV has stayed in the range of 13-14 for 36 hours now without any additional blood transfusions. I was hoping that when I would call this morning they would tell me her PCV was around 17% so when they said 13% my heart kind of dropped. I am wondering what other people's experience has been with IMHA. I would like to bring her home today if her PCV stays within the same range. The Dr. would like it to be closer to 17%, but he said he would agree to it if she remained stable. This has taken so a toll on me emotionally, physically and financially. Would love to hear others stories... Thanks, jeanne

    Hi,

I have a bichon friese named chloe who was diagonsed with autoimmune disease which is the same i think at about 8 months old and is now 21 months.  She has gone through 5 blood transfusions and various medication ie prednisone and cyclosporin.  She has also gone through a bone marrow biospy which proved nothing substantiel.  Actually it did prove she had no cancer cells or scarred tissue which would have been fatal to her.   At the moment she is at home with me but is in very fragile condition. even thouugh she just had a transfusion last thursday.  She caught some type of virus and was throwing up constantly for two days.  I have had to feed her baby food and keep her hydrated.  its been really tough.   I can certainly relate to what your going though.  Twice when we brought chloe in her PCV was 4%. she has very little white blood cells and platelets as well.  They have not really been able to tell me what she has.  We suspected maybe tick fever but the test came back negative for that as well.   She could have died at least three times now but she is such a fighter its amazing.  I think the younger age they get it the more chance they have to beat it since their alot stronger.  Chloe's ears and gums are pale white today.  I'm not sure what her PCV but we decided since she had such bad reactions to the last two that we were not going to transufse her again.  this was a very difficult decision but she has been picked with needles in all four of her paws and there's brusing. i cant even tell you how all this has impacted me and my family and we have another 4 year old mati-poo named buddy who loves her so much.  We just take things day by day now.  Were praying she makes it.  Someone on here mentioned milk thistle and probiotics so you may want to look into these. i will pray for your baby to have a full recovery.  if you have any questions please e-mail me.

    Best,

    Donna

Donna, I'm glad to see you checking out other posts on here, but this is an old one.  She did wind up ultimately on the bigger thread.
