Belly flab?

    Belly flab?

My almost 6 year old pit bull mix seems to have a sagging belly.  It wasn't this way before.  It is in the hind area.  I know she needs to lose a little weight.  So I have her on a special diet but the belly still sags.  I have never seen this on another dog unless they had puppies.  She has never had puppies and was spayed young.  Do other dogs have this?

    Has she been on prednisone?

I'd ask the vet -- is it the same on both sides?  Would be wise to have it palpated at least.

She has not been on any medicine.  Both sides are the same.  I did take her to the Vet and he put her on a diet.  He quickly felt her sagging belly, but did not palpate it.  I have just never seen any dog with a sagging belly like this unless they had puppies.

Was any blood work done?  A sagging belly can be a sign of Cushings.  http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2114&aid=416

I was originally worried about Cushings.  The Vet said that it would look like a pendulum belly and not just her belly sagging where it is suppose to go up in her undercarriage (if you know what I mean).  He did run some blood work and it all was fine.  She is very deep chested so the undercarriage near her hind end was always way up to emphasize the deep chest.  Now that part is sagging.

I honestly think it just could be from aging - my dog seems to be hanging lower where it was tucked and his weight has always been good and if anything I've had him leaner for a few years.  It is purely skin on my guy and I have attributed it to aging - he will be six in a few months.

Guess it happens to all of us as we age Wink

My first thought was aging as well, most medium breeds 6 is about considered middle age's beginning. If she is a bit portly and on a diet when she LOSES weigh the skin may sag just as it does on a person that's had gastric bypass. If her middle was rounder...and now it is less round, where is that skin going to go, pulled by gravity? downwards.
