Belly button?

    Belly button?

This isn't entirely relevant to this forum, but none of them were and it's kind of an odd question.

How long can a dogs "belly button" be? I apologize for not having a picture at this time, I can try if it's necessary. The reason I ask is that I have a neutered male rescue (beagle-dachshund mix at best guess) that I noticed has a long scar where his belly button should be. My other dogs is just a small spot, and he is a much larger dog, where-as Moe is half his size and his is really long, almost like an incision. As he is a rescue, I have no clue what his medical history is, and it was just a little concerning that perhaps he has had previous medical issues or surgery that I don't know of and could be a future concern? It wasn't noticed prior to his last visit, but I will certainly bring it up at his next for a professional opinion. The scar is about an inch long and has a clean cut incision look to it almost.

Just thought I would ask, I haven't seen too many dog "belly buttons", but collectively I am sure you all have enough to know if this is normal.

Perhaps its a repair from an umbilical hernia?

I would say that's too big for a normal belly button. I agree with herniation or maybe a previous surgery.

Tiffy, yes and they're cute, if you can notice them ;) Furry corgi belly might not be optimal for spotting one!

Yeah, Tiffy they do -- they are usually just a whole lot cleaner and less noticable than we mere humans!!  (does that mean dr. should modify their surgical practices during human births???  Momma dogs are more efficient??  or ... perhaps it's just a physiological difference???

So many things can happen during birth -- an umbillical hernia, or even an injury .... given the fact that it's noticable it's likely a hernia repair given the location but a vet should be able to tell you

    Dogs have belly buttons?

LOL - I just realized this the other week too! I was petting a beagle belly and felt a tiny bump, so I called DH over and he, after much giggling, explained the concept of belly buttons. Then I went to pet a Rottie belly and sure enough - belly button!
