Tasha's Surgery

    Tasha's Surgery

She had minor surgery this morning to remove a lump on her leg. Same leg as Wyatt, same kind of scenario, but the vet just called and said she was done, she was waking up and I can get her at 1pm. :D  Yay!

Now let's hope our results are as good as Wyatt's!!  :D

I'll have all my fingers and toes crossed that her report comes back good.

I hope everything works out for you and Tasha.

She's home with me now. Her incision doesn't look as gruesome as Wyatt's did but it's got cute pink stitches all over.  She's a whiner so it's going to be tough to decide if she's in pain, but I'm sure she'll let me know somehow.  She's sleeping off the drugs and hopefully all will be well for her.

Leslie -- she **could** be super thirsty tomorrow -- some dogs are following surgery (all depends on how they react to the tube *and* the sedative/anesthesia combo).

I posted for you on Facebook (I hope you find it *sheesh*) -- she **will** be in pain.  She just plain will.  but that's not all bad -- pain will simply help keep her sedentary.  Dogs deal with pain far differently than we do -- and typically it's necessary to keep them from over-doing.  "being careful" is just not a doggie concept.

You can do *little things* to help her and that will soothe her emotionally which may help more than anything.  Chamomile tea -- sweeten it with a bit of honey or a bit of meat juice and add to her food.  Add the soggy herbs as well.  It's good to help her tummy and it's a great easy soothing addition as an nsaid that won't crowd anything else she's taking.  it can be that little extra "feel better" kick that helps.

Keep her on white sheeting as much as possible -- then if it oozes you can wash it but it also keeps fibers and other stuff from getting IN the wound.

Get some liverwurst -- put her pills in that.  It is yummy and again, it make things **easier**.  Helping her be relaxed is honestly as good or better than straight pain meds.  Most pain meds make them loopy and they don't last all that long (and coming down off from those can be really difficult)

If you don't have any sort of e-collar you can MAKE one.  Take a thick bath towel and roll it up == you want it to just go around her neck **tight** after it's rolled.  Put it right behind her skull -- tight enough so she can't slip out of it.  And you can use duct tape even to tape it shut (or you can use vet wrap if you have some).  Essentially it keeps her from bending her neck to bite at herself.

If you Google "home make e-collar" you will find a couple of videos even that will help you make one.

Holler at me if I can help you ok??

I'm really not being hard-hearted about pain.  There IS a time for pain meds but most of we humans tend to think they need to avoid ALL pain like WE want to -- and it's just not the dog way usually.  Does that make sense?

Callie, yes it does. I saw your FB post too, thanks for all the help. :)

She was quite loopy yesterday, so much so that she didn't even know she needed to pee and peed on the bed. Tongue Tied  So I've been working on cleaning the blankets and sheets and such. Oiy.  She did not like the cone e-collar last night and whined most of the night. It's very small in the RV and she gets stuck.  She's the type of dog to stand there and whine until someone helps her...   Since I bring them to work with me, she is not wearing it during the day today.

She's currently sleeping, which is good.  But she hasn't wanted any water since I brought her home... and she had diarrhea this morning.  Hopefully it's all just after effects and she'll get to feeling better soon.   If she doesn't want water today I will soak her food tonight.

sort of lead her along and *show her* that if she tips her head a bit she can get thru narrow places.  If you get a plastic "cone of shame" (was there ANY dog-lover who didn't remember that part of "Up"???) then show her when going up the steps that you tip your head up so the collar doesn't catch.  But don't cave -- leave it on her. In a day or so she will join the "Bash it -- IT WILL MOVE" school of e-collar wearing.  Just show her how to do something.

Water bowls can be a problem tho -- she may be able to stick her head in and not 'reach' the bowl itself.

    Good luck!!

When Jessie had to wear a cone, she didn't whine but would come into our bedroom, stand by our bed, and stare at us with the most pitiful look she could muster. They'll do everything they can to tug play on your sympathy, hoping you'll take it off.

Yep; you may need to remove the collar occasionally so she can drink.
