    Doggy Dandruff

I just recently adopted a pit mix from the human society and since we took her home realized how much dandruff she has. I have tried giving her a bath and it only subsided for a day. I have another dog but she is a welsh corgi and her coat is the complete opposite. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help with my pit's dandruff??

    Thanks!

pits are really prone to allergies.  Have you brought her to your vet for a health eval?  Having working in rescue for years, I realize the rescues/shelters bring the dogs to the vet to get them vaccinated, etc, but, really, that could have been weeks ago.  I'd wonder what the vet has to say before trying at-home treatments.  They may look at it and go "oh, no, that's not dandruff, that's....."

Also consider, what was she eating at the shelter and what are you feeding her at home?  If it's better stuff, in a matter of weeks her body will start shedding off the crappy stuff - coat and skin included, in favor of the healthy good stuff growing underneath if you're feeding better food.

An addition  to what Paige said- frequent baths will only make the dandruff worse. I realizecoming from the pound/rescue, she probably needed one this time.  Along with good food (and possible supplemnts), frequent brushing will help with the dandruff

Lola, our beagle, has really dry skin/dandruff. It was really bad when we first got her, and she was so itchy. The vet prescribed her some medicated shampoo that I'm supposed to use weekly. It would help for a few days, and then she'd just be itchy again. I started giving her fish oil supplements, and that worked wonders. She's much less itchy now, and I haven't noticed any dandruff on her in a while. I agree that you should probably take her to the vet and see what they say.

The vet did a wellness exam and everything checked out fine, I think if it gets worse or she starts to itch I will make an appt to check on it. Thanks everyone

What are you feeding?  She needs to be on a HIGH QUALITY food that contains no corn, wheat, soy, grain fragments of grain glutens, and the first ingredient should be a named meat or a named meat meal.  Often the very first place to look for allergies, which is often what skin issues are, is at the food.

I feed both my dogs blue buffalo... I brushed her today and noticed a dramatic decrease in the dandruff. Maybe she was just stressed from being at the pound

My lab gets really bad dandruff when she's stressed. So I try and keep the stress level down and her dandruff is at a minimum now. :)
