Quick advice needed - Wound - CoBuHe

Barb -- the one that closed quick would be the one to worry me -- you iced it, which was great to get the swelling down.  *however* it also caused it to close and the bacteria will stay deep.  You might honestly want to put warm compresses on it and see if you can draw it out that way.  As Gina says -- take body temp (she is NOT gonna like you for that) but you don't want something like that to go systemic (sez the woman who has had cellulitis for 3 weeks and *yes* dogs CAN get it and it's horrible).

Understood Callie.  I just got home...and although they are not pretty...they look good considering.  She is cool as a cucumber, this morning she was a tad warm.  This morning before I left for work...I did put a warm rag on it, prior to putting the Neosporin on it.  I just put some more neosporin on the wounds...so in a little bit, 1/2 hour or so...I'll do just that..put a warm compress on it.

Keeping me on my toes is something the whole family is doing these days.  LOL  Big Smile

And just 'cos *I* got sick (from heaven knows what cos I try to be careful *sigh*) doesn't mean she will -- but if it were you or I we'd be going for a tetanus shot!

I thought about that...should she go in for one?

I'm soooo glad to hear she is relatively okay.  My co-worker today told me their Golden had an accident yesterday with a fire ring.  Several deep lacerations in muscle.  He's gonna be okay too.

Ack !  It's times like this I really we wish we could actually verbally communicate with them.

You know, I don't know ... but I'd call the vet and ask.  I honestly don't know if dogs *get* tetanus.

Ouch Mindy...that hurt me just reading it.

I think I will call the vet tomorrow and ask the question if I should worry about tetanus or something similar.

I placed a warm compress on her three times this evening.  Must have felt pretty ok, because she didn't balk.  Put some more neosporin on the wounds and now she's all tucked in.  By the way she acts, you wouldn't think anything has happened to her at all.

Sometimes there's a lot to be said for a warm compress.  I'd rather nudge your elbow and worry for nothing, than not worry when we shoulda.  Hope it all blows over to absolutely nothing!

Ok -- I'm clueless -- what's a fire ring?  It sounds absolutely nasty -- poor dog.

Hi Barbara!  Sorry to read about Heidi's accident.  Hope she is still feeling OK.

    It was nasty.

This "fire ring" is a hoop about 36" in diameter made of some heavy gauge sheet steel.  Place it on the ground to contain campfires.  "Fire-pits" are common here in backyards.  Anyway, this fire ring was leaning up against the neighbors picnic table all winter and got buried in snow.  The snow is rapidly melting the past couple days.  Augie and his people were in the backyard playing with his Frisbee using both his yard and the neighbors yard.  This is a very common occurrence.  Augie is running after the Frisbee....looking AT the Frisbee, veered off when the wind took it and I guess kinda slid into the metal fire ring.  He got the toy, ran back to his people and collapsed.  Long story short, my co-worker said they thought he was going to bleed to death.  They ended up at the University Vet Hospital.  He is patched up, drugged and bandaged.  His mom is a life long nurse and happened to have yesterday and today off work.  He will be fine.

How is Heidi today.  I hope she recovers well.  Doesn't sound like she is too worried about it.  No idea about tetanus in dogs but given what caused the wound...I would certainly call the vet.

Thanks for the link.  I'll be calling the vet this morning to discuss for sure now.

She is fine this morning...no sign of temperature.  The wounds are looking good.  I'm keeping them clean and applying the neosporin.  I'm working from home today...so can apply 3 times.  She tolerates the warm compresses well too....must feel good.

If we didn't know what happened and coudn't see her poor face, we wouldn't think any thing at all is wrong.  High energy, eating, drinking and everything else normal.  She doesn't understand why I won't throw her ball in the yard...but there is no way she is getting dirt in those wounds.

YAYYYYY....it'd be enough to have me worried also.  Give her some hugs and scritches for me.

I talked to the vet tech today.  She said in her 28 years in this business, she has never seen a dog get tetanus...so that is good news.  She told me to keep doing what I'm doing and if she gets a temperature...I could bring her in for some antibiotics.  But she made me feel like the nursing I'm doing is a good thing.  Smile

We already knew that.  You're a great dog mom, Barb!
