    Diarrhoea

Does anyone have any home remedies to ease diarrhoea? My german shepherd ate something which was on the beach, a bit of stinking fish i think, she had eaten it before i could stop her now she has suffered diarrhoea for the past 24 hours. I have limited her food intake but it doesnt seem to be getting any better. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Pumpkin, plain old canned pumpkin.  Not sure on the amount, but maybe someone else can tell you that.  It's not a lot, maybe a tablespoon.

Also, cooked rice helps.  You can add lean chicken or beef, cooked of course, and keep it bland (no spices).

A lot of people will say pumpkin but that has never worked for me (made things worse actually).  I think the pumpkin works for helping to firm up loose stools, but actual liquid blastomatic diarrhea it did nothing.  If the dog still has an appetite and is drinking water, I would fast the dog for 24 hours (but encourage drinking water to prevent dehydration).  Then use a bland elimination diet for a few days before weaning back on to the normal food.  My bland diet is overcooked white rice and boiled ground beef (I boil it so I can pour off all the grease, also put it in a strainer and run hot water over it to get all the grease off).  I use about a 50/50 mix of meat and rice.  I make a big "casserole" of this and feed this to the dog for a few days, then slowly mix in their kibble until they are back on the regular kibble.  However if the dog appears to have no appetite, is not drinking enough/dehydrated, and acting lethargic, I would go to the vet.

If the dog still has liquid diarrhea after over 48 hours, I also do a round of flagyl/metronidazole.

My dogs get about a quarter cup of pumpkin, and yes, sometimes it doesn't do the trick.  The dog needs to be fasted for 24 hours to rest the gut, then the easy on the tummy diet as suggested.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, will certainly give the pumpkin a try.

I believe you can also use human immodium but I'm not sure on the dose.  I haven't had much luck with that either though.  Generally if the dog has really bad diarrhea there's a good reason the body wants to "expel" whatever is working its way through their system.

I'd be cautious about using immodium. It contains one of the drugs that dogs with the MDR1 mutation should avoid. My understanding is that while the MDR1 mutation is mostly found in collies, aussies, shelties, and mixes of those breeds, it also occurs rarely in GSD's. Probably wouldn't be a problem in most breeds, including GSD's, but there's no reason to take the chance when other alternatives are available.
