    Crushing glucosamine and chondroiton pills?

    Hi Everyone-

Just curious if anyone who gives their dogs G&C have crushed the pills?  It's a struggle to get her to take 3 huge pills a day, and the powdered and liquid stuff is twice the price, so I was thinking I could just crush the pills and put it over her food.  I did a bit of research online, everything I read says it's fine to crush up the pills.  I'm going to call my vet tomorrow, but just wanted to hear other opinions as well.

    Thanks!

I don't think there's an issue with the gluc/chond pills--they're not coated or time release, so it should be OK. Sinbad takes his right out of my hand and sometimes he does crunch into it. So far, no problems.

Is this for arthritis?  You might want to look into Knox NutraJoint.  It comes in a powder form and is far more cost-effective.

G/C are hydrators -- literally they "plump up" cartilage and get it to hold moisture so it cushions better.  Chondroitin, in particular, is a bit of an anti-inflammatory.  But mostly they simply help cartilage to be more "cushy".

Knox is different -- knox puts the stuff the body needs to *re-build* cartilage into the body (it uses bovine cartilage, calcium, trace minerals) and literally helps it REPAIR cartilage.  It's not temporary.  Takes about 3 months to fully kick in and repair cartilage but it's a more permanent help.

You can give it *with* g/c if you want (in fact Knox makes caps that have both).

Do be aware there is a HUGE quality issue out there -- some g/c looks much cheaper but it's also likely to be far less quality..

Thanks for information.  I'm curious-what is 'good quality' g/c?  (I just bought several bottles of Schiff's, so I'm a bit stuck for at least a few months).  Any brands you have heard of higher quality?

I'm also definitely looking into Knox NutraJoint, also-great idea!

You tend to get what you pay for -- avoid "generic" or store brand generally unless you KNOW someone who takes it and likes it.  I can sometimes be mostly sugar.

Certo (the stuff you make jam with?) IS condroitin.  Yeah -- that's actually what it is.  You can often do it cheaper by simply taking like 1/8 tsp. (see if that much works for you) and keep it in an airtight container.
