MOLSON

    MOLSON

Here's the run down on Molson, for those who haven't been updated/don't know the whole story.

We've been battling a double ear infection since September. We've tried several ear drops and cleaners and antibiotics and steroid shots. They seem to get better (no smell, less discharge, less swelling) then- BAM!- they're 100x worse than before. My poor boy has been in so much pain, his quality of life has been extremely diminished.

The fur on his back has also been falling out periodically and growing back at a slow rate and a darker color. The fur on his tail is yet to grow back. His skin is very flaky. Our regular vet said this was just psoriasis and not to worry about it.

He's also lost muscle and fat on his skull. His bones are very prominent now and his eyes are somewhat sunken in and more droopy, but his overall weight has maintained the same.

He's been on a raw diet; Stella & Chewies raw beef patties.

We had Senior Wellness Panel (IH-CBC, Chem,T4) done last week and everything came back 'normal' except his white blood cell count was very high (indicating infection) and he had Lyme (he tested positive for Lyme in April 2010).

Yesterday he refused to eat or drink anything. He became extremely lethargic and just wasn't himself. Something wasn't right so we brought him into the e-vet in Boston (Angell). Molson's blood was drawn and sent off for a more specific T4, the vet thinks he's hypothyroid. We also found out that his middle ear was so damaged and scarred that he's currently deaf and he will near both his ear canals removed and will be permanently deaf. We also found out that a nerve near his ear was damaged to the point of nonfunctioning which was causing weight loss on his skull and ears- it is irreversible.

I feel horrible about all of this. I trusted our vet and I feel like I've been getting the run around with her (and close to a thousand dollars down the drain). I even tried calling her this morning to explain everything that happend last night and was put on hold for over 5mins, so I just hung up. She has my number and knows exactly who I am, so when she's free she can call me. I know the e-vet will be calling her today also.

    Wow, Steph!  Poor Molson.

Please don't beat yourself up....we are supposed to be able to trust our vets, and hindsight is always 20/20.

Absolutely.  You have done SO MUCH to try and help Molson.  None of this is your fault, and rest assured Mo doesn't think so either.

Sending good vibes for the surgery.

(((hugs))) I'll be keeping Molson and your whole family in my thoughts.  Don't beat yourself up - you're doing all you can and he knows it!

I saw this on FB but just wanted to say again how sorry I am that Molson is going through all this.  You too, of course.  He will feel so much better once the ear canals are removed and he's recovered.   I agree with Glenda, you can't beat yourself up because you have done everything your vet advised.  Sometimes it does take a different view from a different vet to get to the bottom of things.  Please give Molson some gentle kisses from me.  When is he having the surgery?

    • Gold Top Dog

Poor Mo!  I can't imagine how ouchie he's feeling.  Like Glenda said, do not beat yourself up.  You are doing all you can for your boy.  I know he holds no grudges, only love for you & DH.  Good vibes for you, Mo & DH.  It sounds like you're on the right track now.  ((HUGS))

Sending nothing but good vibes for both you and Molson during this difficult time.  Let me know if I can do anything to help.

     Oh poor guy :(

(((Steph))) Agree w/ what everyone has said.  You did the best you could with the info you had.  Now you have new info and a new direction to follow.  We all know you are going to do the best you can for your boy.

Poor Molson...good healing vibes coming his way and special {{hugs}} for his Mommy.

Steph PLEASE PLEASE CALL ME.  We went thru almost exactly the same thing with Muffin -- You've seen my diatribes before on forcing a vet to address the possibility of DEEP bacterial infections.

Vet's don't.  So often they don't.  They just keep handing you Otomax and "stuff" but you have to culture deep inside to find it.

Also -- cockers are notorious for NOT showing good thyroid results with classic "normal" thyroid tests.  We had Billy's tested FOUR FRIGGING TIMES and it came back well within range ... a "bit" low but IN range.

Did bloodwork with Dr. Dodds?  VERY LOW.  And his has been stubborn to achieve the results we wanted with the supplement -- he's on a danged big dose of thyroid supplement but it's been like day and night with his skin and coat stuff.

Muffin went thru the bilateral ear ablations.  BOTH ears.  It made a GI-NORMOUS difference in his quality of life.  There are FAR worse things than deafness.  Being without pain, being able to concentrate and feel "happy" again??  Those are huge.  But this is NOT a surgery you want your local vet to do.

I'll email you my phone -- call me cos I can tell you about the whole 9 yards.  I know it seems the deck is completely stacked against you but that's not the case.

But yes -- you will likely be ultimately SO angry at your vet it's not funny.  Because they **should** suggest a culture and sensitivity EARLY on when you see recurrent ear infections.  AND after treatment is done there should be **another** one to make SURE all the bacteria is gone.

When Mufferino had his surgery -- he had e-coli, and strep and an "unknown bacteria" in the one ear.  STREP????? in an **ear**????    Yep.

If you can put him on a NO-grain diet you'll help.  e-coli is likely part of the equation somewhere and e-coli thrives in a grain-fed environment.

I know exactly how black this feels and sounds.

The other thing -- get yourself an ASL sign book and start teaching him elementary sign.  I can, and will, send you the document I did of all the signs Muffin eventually learned.  A dog who HAD hearing learns sign pretty danged easy.  Because they KNOW the words your mouth is forming -- they KNOW what they mean.

Muffin ultimately "learned" about 70 signs -- and not just the "sign" -- once he figured out those signs were us "talking" to him -- THEN he wanted to know ALL the words.  He didn't want to just know if he was going to "the vet".  noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo -- HE wanted to know which one!  so he knew "Dr. B" from "Dr. D" (the sign for "dr" plus the letter sign for the initial of their name).

The 7 year old deaf dog became our WATCH DOG.  His nose would trump their ears EVERY time.  If Muffin said something was "outside" the other two dogs would step back and sit down.  Cos the "Nose" was NEVER wrong.

Take a deep breath.  Like I said -- I've cried the RIVER full on this one.  But never in my life have I had such an intense experience as we did with this and Muffin.  This was where I learned all sorts of things about "how to pick a vet".  *sigh*

Sounds like me. I've cried on and off all since last night through all day today. All the "what ifs" are killing me. I was in line at Stop&Shop (grocery store) and just broke down! NOT like me at all!

This is important.  I keep thinking that although your vet failed you, you have the mechanism to stop further pain/discomfort now that you know, so I will be thankful for that.  (((hugs)))  Thank goodness for Angell Memorial's skilled doctors, and for owners like you who fight for their dogs, against the "judgement and x-years of veterinary school" that tell you the answer isn't right and your dog is sick.

All good healing vibes.  ((Hugs)) again!

When is he having the surgery?

Not sure yet. We have to see a specialist and get the money together (surgery est. cost: $4,000).

    • Gold Top Dog

I talked to you the other night, Steph, and I think Molson couldn't have a better person on his side! You found someone who would listen, and you found out what the problem is. Now, you guys can move on, and he can heal. Dogs without their ear canals are JUST fine, and he already can't hear you. They understand so much intent, and so much body language, they're juuuust fine!

I agree with what everyone has said; this was not your fault, and you did the best you could. I'll be sending healing vibes for Molson. (((hugs)))
