    Runny poop and other questions

Lilith has had runny poop since the day I brought her home and its still not gone. Lilith saw a vet on the 20th and they never found anything wrong with her...but I don't know because the vet missed the lice she had. Shes on the same food her breeder had her on which is Acana Puppy. The only thing I can think of is maybe the vaccines she got on the 20th plus the Revolution she got on the 22nd made her a little sick. Could those things have caused the runny poop? I mean I have a few other concerns, but for the most part she is eating and drinking fine, shes playful and cuddly still.

I was also wondering how often a puppy should be peeing? Lilith pees anywhere from every 10 minutes to 20 minutes- sometimes its a large puddle sometimes its small. She doesn't over-drink or anything, and she does have constant access to water. I'd say she drinks a normal amount. There is no blood in it and its not dark (saw that in Lies thread) and she doesn't seem like shes in pain. But she does lick and nipping herself alot there and there is this sort of brownish stuff around it and there looks like a few red bumps on it. For the most part she only wakes up once or twice a night to go pee. Except for last night she got up six times to go to the bathroom. Lilith does have a vet appointment again on the 17th, and I'm not sure if these things can wait or not. The only reason I haven't just brought her in is because she isn't acting off, doesn't seem like she is in pain or uncomfortable and there is no blood and I did call and the vet said they can't get her in until close to the 17th anyway unless I bring her in for an emergency appointment. So I'm really not sure what to do here.

One last thing....Lilith is a poop eater! As fast as I'm about to pick it up she is trying to lick it up. Its so gross! Any ideas on why she might be doing this? I literally pick up all poop right when it happens, but sometimes she is really quick and gets a good bite of poop while I'm picking it up. *sigh*

Have you tried cutting back her food? Sometimes, that can be an easy answer to loose stools, and if they're not digesting well because it's too much, the poo can smell like food to them. Bean has this problem. If a food disagrees with her or she eats too much and doesn't break it down, she'll inhale the poop. It's gross!

I'd at least take in a urine sample. Sounds like she's irritated down there, and peeing an awful lot, even for a baby. Catching some pee won't hurt her in any way, so no reason not to try!

Thanks I will try that. Right now I've been feeding her, per the directions on the bag, 1.5 cups a day split into 3 meals. Its seems like ALOT to me. But then again Sky only eats 1/2 cup a day and Rickards only eat 1/4 cup a day of their food so I don't know ifs thats just me that thinks thats too much, or that it is really is too much food. But I'll try cutting back about 1/4 cup or so and see if that helps. Ya Lil is the first dog I've ever had that eats poop, and I have a really really weak stomach so makes me super nauseous lol.

I'll call the vets office tomorrow and see if I can just drop a pee sample off to be tested. I just really wasn't sure if thats normal amount of peeing for a puppy, but it seems excessive to me.

I wouldn't wait until the 17th for a possible UTI.  They can become very painful.  Try using a clean soup ladle to catch a urine sample.  Turn a new ziplock bag inside out, pick up a piece of sterile cotton with the bag, and soak up the urine with the cotton - then pull the bag over the cotton and seal.  The vet can squeeze the cotton to get a sample and the cotton decreases the chances of any spillage.

Take the urine sample in ASAP for the most accurate results.  If you have to wait a while, put it in the frig.

Overfeeding can cause diarrhea.  How much and how often are you feeding?  She might do better with smaller, more frequent meals.

If she came to you with diarrhea and lice, I don't know that I would trust the breeder if he/she said Lilith did not have it diarrhea before you picked her up and she may never have done well on this food.  Acana Puppy is not exactly a top food anyway.  I would go with a grain-free food like Orijen Puppy.  Look for a food with the first 3-4 ingredients being meat

Did the vet do a stool analysis?  If not, you need to take in a stool sample, too.  Has she been wormed since you got her?

It sounds good, but I do not like Revolution:  "Revolution is a safe and simple monthly topical medication used to protect your pet from heartworms, fleas, and ear mites.  It also protects dogs from ticks and sarcoptic mange. ... It is also an anthelmintic, which means it fights to expel parasitic worms."

Revolution is a pesticide that is absorbed into the bloodstream and stays there where the kidneys and liver have to deal with it 24/7.  I want something like Interceptor (one chemical that kills baby heartworms, young heartworms, and many intestinal worms) and is out of the bloodstream within 48 hours.  I would use a separate product like Frontline Plus for fleas and ticks.

    How old is Lilith?

    Vaccine info for the lurkers:
    (1)  Do not give one of the big (more than two vaccines) combo shots!!  They are hard on the pup.  If there is a reaction, you don't know what the dog reacted to.
    (2)  Look for a single-vial (less bacteria issues) vaccine that has no Thimerosal (contains mercury) and have the vial label put in her chart (has manufacturer and batch number).  I like the Intervet Progard Puppy DPV shot for parvo and distemper.
    (3)  Other vaccines (like adenovirus [also protects against hepatitis] and parainfluenza) can wait until after she is 6-months and her immune system is more mature.
    (4)  I would rather wait 6-months for rabies, too, but in most locations that isn't legal.  Try not to give rabies within 30 days of any other vaccine.  That one is really hard on them.  There is a 3-year rabies shot, so any insistence on annual rabies shots is strictly political - not medical.  Go out of your area if necessary to get a 3-year certificate.  There is actually no difference between the 3-year shot and what is called a 1-year shot.  In fact the shot given at one-year-old is probably good for life and trials are underway to prove that.
    (5)  Research is showing that MLV (modified live virus) vaccines are good for 7 years (and maybe for life) after the 1-year-old shot.  After the 1-year-old shots many folks don't give parvo, distemper, or adenovirus ever again.  Some just titer (blood test) for antibodies every 3 years.
    (6)  The parainfluenza shot is only good for 3 years and the bordetella shot is only good for 1 year.  Together they protect against 3 of the 8+ causes of kennel/canine cough (doggie flu).  Many folks only give those if they board or go to dog parks.
    (7)  Useless vaccines:  coronavirus, giardia
    (8)  Dangerous vaccine (use only if absolutely necessary and not in combination with other shots):  lepto
    (9)  CAUTION:  It is extremely difficult for a vet to completely disinfect his/her office of parvo.  You and the pup should touch as little as possible - including doors, chairs, walls, counters, etc. - even friendly hands that want to pet.  Bring a towel to put on the vet's exam table and bleach it when you get home.  Change shoes before you get back in the car and bleach the soles before wearing them again.  YES, I am paranoid about parvo!  It is an extremely serious disease and so easy to catch.  Parvo can live in shady outdoor areas for up to 2-years and in homes for 1-year.  For now stick to concrete and yards with a known history.

Ya Lil is the first dog I've ever had that eats poop, and I have a really really weak stomach so makes me super nauseous lol.

Grain-free foods are better digested and don't smell as much like "food" to a pup/dog.  Raw diets are even better in that regard - yeh, I know, your vet would probably have a fit.  Ask him/her just how much nutrition training he got in vet school and if any of it was not from dog food companies.  They don't get much on dog training or behavior modification either.

Lots of folks do feed raw with no more bacterial problems than people have with kibble.  A raw meat and bone diet is a normal species-specific diet for a canine.  Many owners have seen digestive problems and skin problems vanish on a raw diet.

By the way, most dogs digest raw bones with no problems.  Heat changes the chemical composition of a bone and makes it dangerous - prone to splintering.  Most vets who talk about bones being dangerous have never divided the problems they have seen into raw bone problems vs cooked bone problems.

Thanks everyone. I called the vets and I'm just waiting for Lilith to go pee and I'm bringing it in.

ETA- We'll I botched the first attempt, sort of startled her when I tried to get a sample and only got a few drops. The lady at the vets office said they need 1/4 cup....I wonder how long this will take me lol

    • Gold Top Dog

Okay I just tried again and I can't seem to get more than a few drops into the cup and she isn't peeing very much. I called the vets back and asked if I could give them a saturated cottonball with urine and they said no. They need 1/4 cup of liquid to do the tests properly. They said if I can't get a sample in by 5pm today that on Monday they'll take her for the day and try to get one, but I'd really rather not do that because then it will cost me over $200. I really hope I can get that sample today Tongue Tied

*Update*- Just got home from the vets, Lilith has a bad infection shes on Clavamox-amoxicillin for the next 10 days. My poor puppy Sad

    • Gold Top Dog

Good Mom!!!! I'm glad you were able to catch it, and I hope the medicine clears her up.

    • Gold Top Dog
Me too. I ended up getting creative in order to catch the pee. No spoons or measuring cups worked so we bought this plastic mat with ridges and cleaned it. The set her on it and eventually she peed. I've never been so happy to see a puppy pee before lol. Took forever. But I'm glad I did take in a sample and not wait till the 17th. I just never knew it was so bad. And to think shes been going through this since I got her. I wrote her breeder and told her. I really wish I could ask her to cover some of the costs, because Lilith came to me like this and I'm already up to $178 in vet care because of the Lice and now the bladder infection. I just don't know how to ask *sigh* Oh well, at least Lilith will feel better soon.

I'm just seeing this about little Lilith.  I'm so glad you found out what was going on with her regards the UTI.  I agree about the food and runny poo.  Cut back on the amount you're feeding and see if that doesn't help.  Scritches and belly rubs for your little girl.

    • Gold Top Dog

Do you have a contract with the breeder? Like maybe a 6 month health guarantee. I don't know, just throwing it out there.

    • Gold Top Dog

Yes I do have a contract with the breeder. For the most part it only covers genetic stuff, but the first few lines say this:

    1)      sELLER GUARANTEES THAT Puppy is in good health and has received appropriate care. Seller will provide Buyer with a medical chart detailing treatment Puppy has received under Seller’s care and future care Seller feels is essential to Puppy’s well being.

    2)      Seller guarantees that Puppy is free of life threatening diseases or disabilities at the time of purchase. Seller strongly recommends that Buyer have Puppy examined by a licensed veterinarian of Buyer’s choice at the time indicated in the puppy’s health record.

So ya Lilith wasn't in good health when I got her. The vet that examined her the day I got her never noticed any of these issues either, so I am not blaming Lilith's breeder for this at all, I'm just not happy about having to pay for all of this when she had it before she came home with me. Not sure what can be done now. The paragraphs following the above only talks about what will happen if Lilith gets genetically derived medical disorder.  She is covered for Life with Genetic stuff according to the contract, its just doesn't cover anything else.

I wrote Lilith's breeder and still haven't heard from her. Shes probably busy, but I really hope she writes me soon. I would call her, but I am not good with this sort of stuff. And she really is a very nice lady and has been very helpful up to this point. I just hope her and me can at least talk about it.

I'm so glad that you have her on treatment for the urinary problem - poor baby!  Give her some love for me and I agree that cutting back on food might help firm things up.

Others know better but especially since you are giving heavy anti-biotics I would give her a spoon of yogurt with live cultures - I think you need to do that a few hours after you give the anti-biotics but I can't remember exactly.  I know others will chime in.

And i hope the breeder agrees to help out a bit - she definitely knew about the lice so should pay for that treatment or split it.  Good luck

    • Gold Top Dog

The diarrhea could be from her being sick with the UTI right now too.  I know when Willow was a bit younger-between 2-5 years-she got UTI's pretty often.  And, with not all but most of them also came bad poop.   She should start to feel better within a couple of days on the medication! I'm so glad she has you for a mom!

I'm not defending the breeder at all so please don't take this that way.  But, I've known people in real life whose very young females had UTI's too and even on this board the little chow pup also had one.  So, I don't think they are an uncommon thing for dogs that age.  And, they can be tricky to detect especially if they aren't severe enough that you see blood and/or you have a stoic dog.
