Bump on Kya's face

    Bump on Kya's face

While I was out on Monday, my grandfather watched Kya at his house.  When I came to get her, she had a small marble sized lump on her face.  Right under her eye and at the back of her muzzle.  He hadn't noticed anything traumatic or a bee sting.

It has no heat to it.  She's not sensitive with it.  She's in good spirits with a good apettite.  Her teeth are in good shape with no visible trauma to that part of the inside of her mouth.  It feels hard, and not fluid-filled.  I don't see any injection points from a stinger.  Not visible to the eye at least.

We decided it must be a bee sting, and it would go down.

I gave it time and, well, it hasn't.  So she has an appointment tomorrow at the vet (soonest they could fit her in.)

Does anyone have any ideas?  I am really worrying about her.

sounds like a bite - maybe spider? Or an abcessed tooth.

hope she's feeling better after her visit!!

Probably far more apt to be a spider bite -- see if you can use a magnifying glass and see if you see any tiny puncture wounds?

The reason I say spider is b/c they won't go away without anbiotics.

Have you been giving Benedryl?  Usually with a bee/wasp sting you have to give the body some antihistamine to help cope with the venom.

For any sort of a sting/bite (or a SUSPECTED one) give the upper dose of Benedryl.  The typical dose is 1-2 mg per pound body weight given 2-3 times a day.  For a suspected sting give the 2 mg/lb the three times a day.

You're a bit far from the occurrence at thist point ... and yet not enough time for a spider-bite to show decay of the flesh (spider bites can be truly nasty).

An abscessed tooth is also a possible, but usually they don't "pop out" quite that fast.

A spider bite is often something that happens during sleep -- it usually doesn't 'hurt' and often both dog and owner never evern know it has happened.  However, as I said, some spider bites actually require antibiotics in order to go away (and don't stop the antibiotic after it "looks better" -- the toxin is far-reaching thru the body).

Yes, she's gotten benedryl, and she's been stung in the past without such a persistant swelling.

I'll definitely check for a spider bite on her during lunch.

I was hoping to get into the vet earlier, but they're booked till tomorrow.  :(

It's the persistent hardness that came up so hard and fast that makes me think spider.

Heck -- *I* have been bitten by a brown recluse like three times -- it's miserable.

I sure hope it is something simple and goes away soon.  My one golden was stung on the lip by a ground wap and his entire head swelled!

The diagnosis after aspiration is absess.  At this point, the cause is not known.  Kya's teeth are in good shape, and there are no punctures on the swelling.  Her vet has a theory that one of the roots of her P3 molars is causing this, and might need to come out.

To rule out any other causes, she's on a course of anti-botics for 10 days.

    My poor puffy faced munchkin.

Could that be ruled out with x-rays? Anyway, I'm sending healing vibes and hope the abscess clears up soon.

Oh Kya, Tessy says to keep taking your medicine and you'll feel lots better.  If it were me I'd want a longer course.  What did they give you?

I don't know if I'd be wanting to remove a tooth based on a theory.  Tessy had a retro-bulbar abscess and after 3 weeks of antibiotics it went away and never came back!

Give Kya some hugs and scritches for me.

It can be ruled out with x-rays, but the vet wants the course of antibiotics first to see if it goes and doesn't come back.  (I so hope it works like it did for Tessy!)

She has Clindamycin Hydrochloride Drops.  1 cc 2x per day.

And being aspirated made the dreaded face mountain angry.  It's doubled in size since we got home.

Callie, do you know any homeopathics that could augment this treatment?  I'd love to feel like I am doing as much as possible.

Poor Kya :( you might send Callie a PM, she's been swamped at work so she's not on the board too much. A probiotic for sure, with antibiotics.
    • Gold Top Dog

Thanks, I'll do that!  The PM and the probiotics.

By PM I meant email, lol. Sorry, long day!

I emailed you -- *I* have had abscesses -- they are NO FUN.
