    The chocolate chart

Since we get questions about how much chocolate will harm a dog

Oooh, that's handy to have.  Thanks for posting!

A 'chart' may be helpful for someone whose dog has just "gotten into" a once in a lifetime bit of chocolate.

But ............ I distrust individuals more than I get nervous about such information.  It's honestly not that cut & dried -- that makes me REALLYuncomfortable (like some people will think they CAN give that much if they stay "under" an amount).  I have a friend (who makes me crazy) who INSISTS that her dog "never gets sick" -- and she'll SAY she "tries to keep it away from her"  but because she's convinced it's not a big deal she doesn't try really hard.  *sigh*

Even a little is damaging to the liver -- and what *kind* of chocolate (how much dark chocolate is in it, the quality of it) makes a huge difference.

But some people think that just because the dog doesn't "get sick" that it's ok ... and it's cumulative to a degree because liver damage over a long time occurs

Chocolate is turned into a whole difference substance in the liver -- and it's a substance very very like cocaine.

How much cocaine is safe for you?

Maybe I'm splitting hairs here, but gee whiz ... just don't give it to them

Callie, I didn't read the info as saying "you can give this much chocolate to your dog."  I don't think it is suggesting to feed it to them at all.  It is simply a guideline to check if your dog accidentally gets into some chocolate how panicked you should be, as well as cautioning of symptoms of chocolate poisoning.

agree. it's just to determine when to panic

I've heard of cases where a single chocolate chip has made a dog sick!

Wish I had this chart when Misha was a pup. Andrew left food downstairs and we came home to about 5 empty wrappers and Andrew wouldn't tell us how much food had really been down there. Luckily it was only 1 thing, maybe 1 1/2. We looked up the toxic levels of chocolate (they were way below, even then) and the signs of chocolate poisoning. Misha felt miserable, but didn't require a vet visit, just some TLC.

Honestly, Tina I didn't mean YOU.  I just get terrified sometimes at the insane things lurkers can use to justify what they want to do.  Does that make sense?  Most of us intelligent folks KNOW not to give chocolate to dogs -- but there are diehards out there who INSIST they've done it and their dogs aren't "harmed" by it -- and they will use something like this to justify "some".

The point I was trying to make (and not smear anyone in the process *sigh*) is that ANY is ahrmful because it screws up the liver.  And it IS cumulative.

Like I've said before -- my own best friend and I have gone around and around with this -- she "hides" chocolate ALL the time assuming her dog won't find it.  DUMB -- and yet she wonders why the dog has irritable bowel and will throw up all the time ????

    oy .....
