Is this a girl puppy thing

Is this a girl puppy thing

     or something that needs meds?

I've only had boy puppies, so I am not versed on such things.

The first week, Goose was doing great on housetraining. Although she obviously does not have full bladder control and will not for some time, we didn't have any problems getting her out on time and eliminating any accidents inside. Last Friday, she started showing symptoms of puppy vaginitis. Not anything too severe and the vet and I decided we'd watch and see if it clears up as she grows. The vets I work with can be a bit antibiotic happy, while I am not, so watching to see how it went seemed reasonable.
Now she's peeing more frequently...or what seems frequent to me. We take her out quite frequently, as well as after naps, heavy playtime, etc. But, she'll pee a fair amount outside, plus a few dribble pees after that, and then come in and twenty minutes or so later pee a fair amount on the floor.

The vet said we could put her on antibiotics, but again, they can be 'antibiotics for all!!' sometimes, so I thought I'd ask first. Does it seem like normal puppy pee? Do girl puppies pee more than boy pups? Is this normal 9 week old puppy pee? Or, do I need take her in for a urine sample?
If it's normal, I'm fine with sticking it out. I just don't want to ignore a problem.

I'm going to take up stock in paper towels at this rate

I would just have the urine sample checked just to be sure it isn't anything that really does need antibiotics.  Especially, since she seemed to be doing really great with the housetraining earlier on.

I have a half day tomorrow, so I'll likely run her in after I get off work. Normally I'd take her in and have her hang out for the day, but we have ringworm kittens right now and I'm always worried someone won't wash properlyHuh? Particularly since one of the more kitten loving coworkers has no issue kissing their little ringworm laden headsHuh? I do not want a puppy with ringworm

I have a ten week old female who pees ALOT! LOL. But no dribbling in between, unless she is greeted by one of the big dogs. I too would have it checked since she was doing good and has now changed.

Girls may be more prone to UTIs simply because of how they "lean into" the grass/surface to pee.  That picks up bacteria FAR more easily (altho little boy pups don't hike yet either).  But I've always thot it was because the genital area is relatively open so bacteria can enter VERY easily.  Tink ran a lot of UTIs easily.

I am NOT a fan of "strip tests".  I think they can be full of error and if there is something deeply wrong you miss it.  So particularly for a FIRST pup UTI it would be my way to have a urinalysis done just so you aren't missing something that oughta be treated.  things like specific gravity and how acid the urine is -- that goes together with a lot of other things to help you treat.

She does have a nasty UTI..lots of white blood cells.  Her specific gravity, etc was fine Smile. She did have a small amount of blood, but not much.  On antibiotics and a recheck in two weeks.

I was gonna say, the dribbling was worriesome, glad you got it checked out.... and really, really gross about the chick kissing ringworms.  ICK!  I don't blame you for your concern on that front!

    Hope she's better real soon!!

    • Gold Top Dog

Yes..it is gross.  I can admit that I'm overly phobic about skin things like ringworm (simply because we have so many cases at work and it just takes forever to clear up...and it's just icky, lol) But come on now...don't put fungus near your faceIck!

It's nice to know that it was, indeed, abnormal behavior and not a puppy who just likes to pee situation.  Hopefully she'll have some fading of symptoms in a few days and will get back to being a tidy Chow puppy :)

It never ceases to amaze me how easily pups can run a UTI -- and people tend to just **assume** it's puppy transgression and it can make the whole thing into far more of a problem than it should be (particularly when you couple that horrible "urge to go" with the PAIN of a UTI and then add not pleasing your people on top of that!

I SO appreciate the fact that you don't want to overdo antibiotics -- but getting such results made the call clear!  *and* you know there isn't a lurking "renal" problem.

We did think it odd that she was doing so well the first week and then started having accidents.  That's not normally a Chow thing, but again, I've only had males.Smile  We don't scold for puppy pees, though, so at least she wasn't fazed by that aspectSmile They're babies, after all :)

Hopefully the antibiotics will clear things up soon, and we'll be coupling a probiotic with them (spaced several hours from her antibiotic doses) to try and prevent any digestive upset/other issues.

Nope didn't think you did -- but even when there is an *absence of praise* coupled with her own frustration at not being able to "hold it"  with that horrid pressure a UTI makes you feel == it's just plain difficult enough to be a puppy without a freaking UTI ... ya know?? *grin*

     It is indeed :P

You are right on, Willow has always been very clean in the house.  She's only had a handful of accidents in seven years.

I'm glad everything is under control now.  She'll be just fine.  The only thing I can add is just make sure it completely goes away.  That's what happened with Willow.  It never completely went away and kept coming back until they finally did a culture.

Yep, she'll have another sample done in two weeks (after the antibiotics are gone) and we'll see if it's cleared up. Smile  We're also keeping her bits wiped in the meantime, to make sure the puppy vaginitis issue isn't causing more irritation. Smile

Puppy vaginitis can lead to a bladder infection. If that was the cause, after the infection is cleared up the conditions that led to vaginitis will probably still be there.

Keeping them wiped is a very good thing to do, you can also trim off the hair down there. That helps things stay dry, and possibly picks up less bacteria. Those little battery powered personal trimmers are good for this, no scissors please!  We had a puppy with vaginitis, the irritation caused her to pee frequently. Trimming the hair and wiping her when she came in did the trick. We did it for a month, and she seemed to outgrow it. If your puppy does not outgrow the vaginitis, letting them have one heat cycle generally gives a permanent fix.
