Rickards is getting neutered in the morning! *update, need help!*

So I finally kept an appointment for Rickards to get neutered. Its at 8:30am!  I've made like three in the past and I always have backed out, because I haven't been able to handle the thought of something happening during surgery. But I finally feel like its time and I know I'm going to be freaking out the whole time hes at the vets, but I know that him getting neutered is a good thing. I am hoping it helps with the neutered dogs hating him so much, help with his marking issue(I fully understand it might not)- and stop my my MILs dog from marking. My MILs dog never marked until he met Rickards and hes 10yrs old and met tons of neutered males. He also tries to mount Rickards all the time and its so annoying. And I would feel more comfortable going to dog places with Rickards if he was neutered. He does love the ladies, its like he has a knack for finding the only female thats not spayed, I NEVER let him get anywhere near them, but he sure does try hard. He doesn't do that to spayed females though thankfully.  But it would be nice not to worry about that at all. Anywho, wish us luck, I'm still a nervous wreck over this and just want everything to be okay Smile

Good Luck.  Everything will be fine.

He'll be fine.  The less you stress over the whole thing the less likely he'll stress.   Sending you good vibes.

Thanks everyone, I didn't sleep much last night, too much worrying! However I just called the vets about half an hour ago and they said he had no complications and was just waking up from the surgery. I get to pick him up at 4pm, I just can't wait to get him home! Big Smile

I'm glad to hear all went well and that he'll be back home soon. :)  It's always scary when they have any sort of surgery and I understand your stress.  Don't tell anyone Wink but I worry like crazy when any of my dogs have to have surgery, no matter how minor.  I didn't want to add to your stress yesterday so I was acting all nonchalant. :)

Okay Rickards has been home for about 15-20min and I'm VERY worried about him. The whole drive, 35min, he was very unresponsive, I couldn't get him to wake up and his breathing felt shallow. By the time we got home he was a bit more alert, but hes in ALOT of pain. I tried to move him to get out of the van and he started screaming and shaking! His mouth is also very dry and I can't get him to drink anything. And I've never owned a male dog, but the surgery site looks very scary and I don't know if its normal! I don't want to gross anyone out by posting it, but would it be okay, I'm on the verge of crying, I feel horrible right now. Hes hurting and I don't know how to help him. Crying

The pain level would concern me, the very subdued behavior wouldn't really since he did just have surgery.  Did they send any aftercare instructions home with you?

I'd be happy to look at a pic for you - pm me if you don't want to post it here. I work at a shelter and have seen a lot of neuter incisions, so though I'm not a vet I do feel like I can tell a normal neuter incision.

Just let him rest in a quiet room with a little food and water, check on him but don't expect him to be bouncing around like he was pre-surgery for a few days. My dogs are always a bit groggy and "out of it" the day they come home from being under anesthesia. Apollo is a LARGE male and I had him neutered at 4-5years old, he was very sore, but by the next day he was more of himself. Also, Molson shakes when he's been under anesthesia, until he really wakes up, then he's fine.

I'll send you the pictures. I was expecting him to be groggy, but this was unresponsive. Skyline was sort of out of it, but moved around more and she never shook. The only instructions I got was try to give him water and then a little food at night, that was it. I was shocked to see this clinic is on a farm in the middle of nowhere, I'd never been there before, I just knew my sis's in-law have gone there and that it was low cost. I won't get into it, but the ladies were short with me and I felt like they were rushing to get me out. I'll never go there again.

Hes in his crate right now, but still not drinking. I wasn't expecting him to be bouncing around, just not so out of it. I've never seen a dog like that before and I've had two dogs in the past spayed. So I just expected him to respond to me at least or maybe have a drink. Rickards is still shaking a bit, I'm positive its from the pain though. He'll stop then when he moves a little he'll whimper and start again.

I think sending Erin some pic's of the incision site is a good idea or you can post them here.   Don't panic, he's still coming out of the anesthesia and will not be quite normal acting until tomorrow.   The pain can be easily controlled with meds.  Hopefully your vet sent some home along with after care instructions.  I also second the idea of putting him in a crate or somewhere else quiet this evening while he recovers from the surgery.

editing because I see you didn't get any pain meds from this place or much in the way of instructions. :(

I just sent her the pictures. They never gave me anything to give him and the aftercare instructions I got was try to give him water and then a little food at night. This was not my regular vet. I am going to call my regular vet in the morning to see if I can get something from them. He is not a happy camper right now.
