    tear ducts clogged?

my sharpei has severe dry eye, and yes, she has had eye surgery, but this week her eye is worse, red, more matter collecting, anyway she will go to vet on monday, but i am thinking tear duct may be stopped up. i have put warm cloth, which seems to soothe but wondering what else i can do over the weekend. anyway to flush out? currently treating her w/gel & drops.

Well, I've no experience with it in dogs.  But, my cat has a blocked tear duct.  The vet first tried one drop that I cannot recall the name of.  Then when that didn't work we did several weeks of a Prednisone drop.  That didn't work so he had an in office procedure to try to unblock it.  That also didn't work.  So, we were referred to specialist who said he needs a surgery that might work, might not work.  But, it truly depends on what is causing the block and how easily they can flush it or if they can flush it.

When you take him to the vet on Monday they will probably use a green colored drop to see if he is truly blocked.  They put the drop in and then check the nose and throat a short time later to see if they see it.

Also, wanted to mention, it's not painful even though it looks like it might be.

The warm compresses are probably the best "first aid" to get thru the weekend.

Billy has dry eye and the best thing I've found on a maintenance level is something my holistic vet gave me -- (I'm not saying not to do what the regular vet says -- this is *additional*).  One of the vets up at the University of Florida has been doing a study with Black Current Seed Oil (one cap twice a day).  Added to that is a Chinese herb called Chien Li (often used in Oriental medicine on children for recurring eye infections).

I give him both of those twice daily and wow, what an improvement.  I can't give him the cyclosporine eye drops because he had IMHA and took oral cyclosporine for almost 2 years.  so the vets and I really don't want him using the eye drops.

why?  Because one of the side effects to the oral cyclosporine was that he lost the ability to 'blink' at all.  Literally you could put your finger right in his eye and he couldn't "close" them to blink.  There's a weird side effect that happens in some dogs where the moist facial tissues (like the edges of the eyes and nose and edges of the lips/jowls) literally become hard and almost plastic-like.

If this dog has been on cyclosporine eye drops long term it's possible that the tear ducts have lost their elasticity so the gunk can't escape.

The black current seed oil is from a company called "Standard Process" -- so your vet should be able to get them.  If your vet is interested, email me and I'm happy to give you my vet's email address.
