    Shedding bath? other questions

Today I put Coke up on the table outside.  I intended to brush him and do a summer trim.  He doesn't have mats per se (no major clumps or tangles), but after about a half hour still brushing the same four square inches I realized there is so much undercoat that needs to be removed.  I called the pet spa/groomer to get him in.  They said it would cost $55-$75, depending on the time it takes/how bad it is.  They also told me for $7 they can use a special shampoo and conditioner that helps loosen the coat.  Does this price seem OK?  Is there really such a shampoo?  Basically I signed up to have him bathed, blow dried, brushed/shedded, and there's a few areas I need trimmed or shaved.  $75 is twice what I pay my own hair stylist, lol, but I realize he's a big dog and it might be a big job.  Also I was thinking of having his private area/belly shaved.  What do you think about this?  The only other part that gets shaved is between his toes.  The feathering and ears I have trimmed, the rest not cut at all just brushed.  He is so big with so much coat and we don't have A/C.  Usually for the summer he lies down on cool concrete or is allowed to dig a hole in damp dirt.  I figured if his belly area was shaved that might help keep him cool.  Usually I hack all the hair off, just don't have a shaver myself.  Any other suggestions for a large black dog with so much coat in the summer heat?

The price sounds about right. There IS such a thing as a deshedding shampoo...Furminator makes one, and then there are a few other brands. IMO, the groomer I used to work for, could do just as good a job with her force dryer, and the shampoo was one of those 'upsell' tactics, buuuut I'm not a groomer.

I agree with Meg.  If the "special" shampoo is extra just skip it.  Because what's really going to get the undercoat out is the force dryer.  I pay about $75 for Willow.  I've had her belly shaved a few times and it did seem to keep her cooler.  It never really grew back the same way under there though.  The other areas on her body that have been shaved all grew back more than once and you cannot tell anything was done.  But, underneath for some reason never came back right.

What was different about how it grew back?  The fur Coke has in this area is long and thin but very soft and fine.

ETA:  Actually now that I think about it this area has been shaved before.  When we got him he had this ridiculous "lion" cut.

I don't buy into the extra special shampoos, but I do LOOOOOOOOOVE the Best Shot Ultra Plenish conditioner to help me remove undercoat. It's pepperminty and fabulous. It *does* help.

And I think that price is very reasonable. You don't have as much hair as Coke, and your price doesn't include a mani/pedi and "sanitary" clip, LOL. You also are far less likely to pee or poop in the floor/chair, and less likely to biteWink

What was different about how it grew back?

It didn't come back anywhere near as thick.  And, what did come back feels very coarse and different than the rest of her coat.

But, I think my mistake was that they shaved her to the skin in that area.  I think if they had left a little bit then she would of grew it back fine.

When I take Tootsie to the groomer, its $35. I'm sure its because shes only 25 lbs though. If their was any fur shaving I'm sure the price would go up. I tell the groomer I want her to come out with no undercoat. LOL

I think $55-$75 seems reasonable. It usually costs us about $100-$115 for 2 Cockers bathed, blow dried, buzzed down, ears cleaned, nails clipped, teeth cleaned.
