    Temaril-P Side Affects?? Leaking Urine???

Bailey was diagnosed with Kennel Cough after we boarded her while out of town on vacation... She had all her proper vaccines and obviously, they did not prevent this....

The vet put Bailey on an antibiotic (Cephalexin) and also on Temaril-P.  We started both medications Friday evening which both require morning and evening doses.  The Temaril-P requires 3 pills in the morning and 3 pills at night.  This is the 3 full day she has taken the medicine and we lay down in bed and I realize that she is leaking urine!  I have taken her outside thinking maybe she was having some bladder issues but this has not helped! I am not sleeping on the floor with her because I can't talk to the vet until the AM.

Does this have anything to do with the medicine..???!!! She is sleeping soundly and doesn't even seem to know this is happening... She hasn't had any issues going to bathroom until tonight.... What gives?!?

What gives is the dose of Temaril-P may be too high for her: http://www.drugs.com/vet/temaril-p-tablets.html

Scroll down to the side effects part and you will see polyuria and polydipsia as side effects that usually result in the vet lowering the dose.

If I remember correctly, temaril-p is a combination steroid/antibiotic. A steriod could definetly make her leak urine. I hope you guys can get right into the vet tomorrow and that she's feeling better soon!

Ok ladies - Thanks so much for your response... I feel *a little* better - if thats possible - knowing that that could be a side affect.... I knew she would have excessive urine due to the increase of thirst but I did not know that meant *leaking* urine.... Ive never experienced something like that before... I am waiting for the vet office to roll their phones over...

    Thanks so much!

What happens is the steroid can also affect muscles -- and they literally don't respond like normal.  It can make it hard to 'hold' urine or it can make it impossible to *go*.

Make note of that for *yourself* in future if this dog ever has to be ON straight steroids for anything.

Can you ask your vet why he or she prescribes antibiotics for a viral kennel cough. I was under the impression the shot controlled the infectious kind. The over use of antibiotics is causing so many problems today.

I think Bordetella can be either viral or bacterial. Not knowing which is the cause is why vets usually prescribe antibiotics.

The vaccine is a lot like the flu shot..it protects against some strains, but not all.

Most of the time they give antibiotics because people want them -- and "expect" the vet to give them something.  In the case of viral vs. bacterial?  There's no way of knowing which ... and often they give antibiotics in case a bacterial infection ALSO comes along.

Your statement that antibiotics are over-used is absolutely correct -- but that's a *typical* vet protocol.  That's where owners need to step up and say "Hmmmm, do we NEED to give TWO antibiotics??  Is it really going to be effective"  But unfortunately most people expect and *want* antibiotics despite the fact that they probably aren't going to help a virus.

Nope -- not the case at all.  The shot ONLY helps provide immunity to THAT strain it was vax'd for.  That's a little like assigning Crayola Crayon colors to all the different bugs .. and understanding that the vaccine ONLY helps develop immunity for ... let's say "burnt sienna" and maybe "sky blue".  ALL THE REST of the "colors" (i.e., bugs) really have no help.  There is some hope that "similar" strains may be protected by similar antibodies -- but nothing is at all certain ... just hopeful.

A shot "controlls" nothing.  It is simply a bit of a strain of the disease -- then the body is exposed to that strain ... and hopefully that will result in antibodies being formed.  But whether it's a human flu shot or bordatella (kennel cough) -- the vax ONLY helps the body with whatever strains went into making the vaccine.

For example - the parainfluenza part of the "combo" shot -- the strains that covers really haven't even been SEEN in over 20 years.

Unfortunately insurance companies that insure kennels use bordatella as a "catch all" -- thinking if the dog has had the vax then it's "not their fault" if the dog got sick.  So because their insurer requires it the kennels do -- and it's simply something that looks good on paper because no one can buck the insurance companies.  But the shot really doesn't help much of anything.

The term "Kennel Cough" is sort of like "the flu" and there are 8+ known causes only three of which are covered by vaccines.

Bailey has a tail, right? Get her some boys' underwear (pick her favorite character, LOL, I always do!), and some Depends pads. Then, she can lay on the bed, and not make a mess. Emma wasn't quite big enough for them, but they work GREAT for bigger dogs. The tail goes through the hole, and that's how they stay up. It's pretty inexpensive, compared to dog panties, and it works.
