    Very newby grooming question

I grew up with Australian Cattle Dogs.  They are wash and wear - usually blow coats twice a year (except in the house as I've learned) but just brush when shedding and bathe occasionally.

I just acquired a adult BorderJackJack (3/4 Jack Russell, 1/4 Border Collie).  He basically looks like a border collie puppy with jack russell hair.  My question is, do I attempt to groom him on my own or take him to a pro?  He's used to being bathed but I am totally clueless on how to groom - someone told me plucking (looked like pulling hair out).  Looked rather painful actually...

     Suggestions?

They are probably talking about hand stripping -- a lot of the terriers are hand-stripped. Jennie_c_d knows a bunch about grooming terriers, she'll be along shortly or you could PM her.

We require pictures to accurately help you diagnose this issue :)

Will remedy the problem soon.  I've not had the little guy a week yet and have a few cute photos in my camera that I need to down load. :)  Plus get photos of my heelers up too. :)

Personally, if he's intended to be a pet and companion, I'd just wash him, and brush him, and clip his toenails. If his hair gets in his eyes, you might have that trimmed, or if his feet are super fuzzy, but I wouldn't strip a pet. Shaving messes with their coat texture, and it's not necessary for that mix of breeds. Sometimes, they need a little trimming, but I wouldn't go beyond that.

He's marked like a border collie but he's got straight JR hair.  Really coarse.  Here's a couple of photos - not the best (my camera ate some of the good ones).  Or not...can't figure out how to get photos to display. :(
