    Portion Pacers

Has anyone used one of there? What are your thoughts? I've read that ensuring your pup eats slowly can help prevent bloat which is a major concern for Danes. Do these work as well as they're advertised?

I couldn't find exactly what they are...do you have a link?

Someone once suggested splitting a kibble meal into a muffin tin with tennis balls on top of each hole - I think that'd be pretty cheap (muffin tin from a thrift shop and a bunch of free dead tennis balls from a tennis court) and probably really entertaining if you *ahem* made a video for us :)

There's lots of options for slowing down eating. Sometimes I just scatter the food in the back yard so the dogs have to find it. Sometimes I use puzzle toys and sometimes I use just a plain old plastic pop bottle (or water bottle). I tried the special bowls with the lumps in them but my dogs just tipped the bowl over so they could get at the food faster.

We always used large rocks or cans. Free. LOL.

I made this thing for Nikon a few weeks ago.  At work in the recycle bin I found this large plastic container, like the shape of a giant pickle jar but it was lighter weight plastic and smelled like it had cookies in it (yes I take things out of the recycle bin and smell them!).  I took it home and cut several holes about the size of a nickel.  Now when I feed Nikon I put his kibble in there.  He's used a treat ball before so he knew right away to push it with his nose.  Yesterday he worked at it for probably an hour getting his meal out.  He usually eats fast and then tries to finish off the other dogs' food, or if I feed outside by scattering kibble he gets way too much.  Before that was not an issue b/c he was growing and needed to eat twice as much, but now he only needs about 3 cups a day total.  He likes the kibble jar even though it takes longer.  The other dogs ignore it so it's a win-win.

If I were to buy a food dispenser it would be this ball.  It rolls easily but the way the hole is designed, it's not always easy to get the food out.  Also Nikon likes the swiss cheese aspect of it b/c if it gets jammed in a corner he can easily grab it with his teeth and carry it to the middle of the room.
