The BBDs got into the trash (and grapes!)

The BBDs got into the trash (and grapes!)

    GRRRR!!!  Angry

Came home and they had overturned our step-open, supposedly dog-proof trash can.  Bad thing is, yesterday I had put a bag of grapes in the trash.  Yes, they found them.  Now I found the bag of grapes, still full, on the loveseat, but also found one stem on the floor, stripped clean.  No idea which one ate them, or both.

So I called my vet, and told him that my best guess is that one or both of them ate the grapes off the stem, probably 10-15 grapes on the stem.  He said based on their weight and the amount of grapes, he's not concerned about kidney issues, unless they start showing signs of upset.

Of course, I immediately gave them both peroxide as soon as I got home (based on the fact that the almost-full bag was still there, they must have gotten into it right before I got home).  Harry has puked, and there were some grapes in the vomit.  Sammy, who has had more peroxide than Harry, hasn't puked yet.  I've dosed him twice in the last hour.  Should I dose him again?  I think he wants to vomit, but he's fighting it (he's burping a lot).

Any other advice?  Vet said to look out for vomiting (which of course I am trying to make happen) and diarrhea.  Both dogs have pooped already, both normal.

Ooooh, bad, bad boys!!!  Why do you worry me so???

Harry, Sammy, don't scare your mom like this!!!

I wouldn't re-dose with peroxide.  I'd give them both time for their stomachs to settle, & then I'd push water so that you can dilute the toxins from the grapes as they make their way to & through the kidneys.

Thanks Amanda.  Should I skip their dinner?  If their tummies are already wonky, I don't want that making it worse.

Update-Harry pooped a small amount again.  Solid, but had grapes in it, so he did eat some long enough ago to pass all the way through.

But they are both acting normal, which was the first thing my vet asked.  So I guess that's good.

I have learned the HARD way there are just some things I never throw away -- FLUSH?  Yes.  but not in trash I walk away from.  **MY** heart just can't take it!!!

Sounds like you got them all -- and honestly that many shouldn't be enough to be a problem.

If it were me, & they are feeling ok, I'd go ahead & feed them.

Callie, I feel like an idiot for not immediately putting the grapes in the big bin.  But, they've never done anything like this before.  Of course now, the trash can will go in the garage when we're not home, since I assume they now know how to tip it over.

I put a little chicken broth in their water bowls and they both lapped it all up.  I'll do that again in a bit.

Thank you!  The vet said that, too, but you backing him up makes me feel better, too. Smile

Before I knew about grapes (and dogs) I used to give them to one of my dogs who LOVED them!!!  It was nothing for him (20 pounds) to eat several of them!  I've never had a problem with him but once I found out about grapes and dogs he never got them again!

Might be a good idea to have some blood work done in a couple days just to be on the safe side.  Might help you mentally (ease the mind)  if anything at all.

Hope they show no adverse signs or effects.

    Good vibes coming your way.
