Pemphigus is pretty rare **However** it is an auto-immune disease and therein lies the big huge concern.
One auto-immune disease can morph into another very very easily -- The standard protocol for ANY auto-immune is generally prednisone and maybe another immune suppressor like cyclosporine (Atopica) or azathiaprene (Imuran) - ALL of these drugs are majorly nasty and cause really really severe side effects in the body.
1. Milk thistle -- MILK THISTIle ***MILK THISTLE*** -- it will help protect the liver from the steroids and steroid-like drugs. If you want to use the herbal caps **start** (and increase from there) with about 3-4 capse twice a day. I usually refer foks to http://www.leavesandroots.com -- you can get it in bulk (look under "M" -- and you want the ground herb -- it's $12.75 per pound that way and that's equivalent to about 12 bottles of capsules -- so that's about $175 - $200 worth of the herb for Twelve dollars and seventy-five cents -- it's NOT in capsules -- you just sprinkle it on the dog's food (you may need to add a 'wet' topper). Start with maybe 1/4 teas. and go up to about 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons (big heaping spoons) twice a day. This truly will protect the liver -- DO NOT WAIT -- start it right away.
2. Consider doing something alternative. TCVM (Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (http://www.tcvm.com - there's a locator on the left) will help support the immune system and can help avoid some of the drugs and side effects.
ALSO my biggest suggestion for you would be to find a vet who does homotoxicology -- If you go to the AHVMA website http://www.holisticvetlist.com/ and use their search -- if you need help email me. Homotoxicology is really cutting edge stuff -- but it can truly TREAT a problem like this **without** needing the steroids -- this is a body-balance problem. The body is turning against itself and this stuff is incredibly powerful medicine.
Homotoxicology uses homeopathy remedies and combines them with a drop of the dog's own blood (thereby making a "remedy" out of the dog's own blood) -- the cell memory in the DNA literally contributes the information for the body to see this serum as a "map" to literally help the body fix what's broken here. There are a couple of us on here who have used this -- ti's pretty cutting edge stuff but incredibly effective. Email me if I can help you more here.
