yucky eyes..

    yucky eyes..

does anyone have good tips for trimming the little hairs right next to the eye? .. my recently adopted shih tzu, Coco, has some nasty buildup around her eyes.. i clean her eyes with a warm cloth a few times a day to prevent it from getting any worse (she LOVES getting cleaned! lol she knows when im wetting a washcloth its for her, and she sits like a little angel), but this stuff has been there since I adopted her.  shes very squirmy when shes uncomfortable.  does anyone have a good way to trim her without her bugging out?

i'd bring her to the groomer, but she doesnt really need to be groomed yet.  her fur is JUST starting to grow back in (the rescue shelter shaved her bald because she was so matted), and we bathe her regularly.. but its got to be annoying for little tufts of icky hair to be in her eyes.

    help? thanks! <3

The groomer can JUST get the hair in front of her eyes, or do the eye hair and her nails, if that needs to be done. They don't have to completely groom her.

I use Nutri-vet eye Cleanse everyday in Bonnie's eyes, the also wet the area around them with cleanser too and I use a round tiny sponge like you use for makeup and rub on those areas.  I get it at PetSmart.

If you're going to use clipers or scisors to trim the hair in front of the eyes, be sure to use a greyhound comb or flea comb between their eye and the cliper blades; That way to can be sure that you're not going to cut their eye.

I would also have your vet rule out any type of eye infection or KCS (http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_kcs__dry_eye_.html).  KCS is "dry eye" but can cause an icky discharge.  It can also cause painful eye ulceration and blindness.

Another thing to look at might be what kind of water you are giving her to drink. My dogs had very icky eyes for the longest time (vet had ruled out eye infections) and I could barely keep up, wiping their eyes clean. One day a neighbour lady told me to give them purified water instead of tab or mineral water, and within a few days, it made a huge difference. A few months later a new vet confirmed that mineral or tab water can cause a lot of icky eyes.

Meanwhile I would get her hairs around her eyes trimmed, cause depending on the way they grow, I've realized, they can also cause some irritated eyes at times, and trimming them, often helps a lot!
