    Red has Bells Palsy

A few days ago I noticed my 8 year Golden/Collie/GordonSetter Red's right side of face is paralyzed.  Doctor prescribed doxycline and prednisone and artificial tears because he can't blink.  His ear, eye and gums are limp and drooping, and drooling on right side only.  We gave him Aconite and now Causticum homeopathic remedies.

Anybody have experience with this?  I read it may take 2 weeks to 4 month to recover, if you are lucky.  It may have been brought on by cold wind and we had a lot of snow here in DC.  He  appears to be happy and playful, but I am keeping him out of the snow except to pee for now.

Hmmm -- I've no first hand experience but a couple of suggestions:

    1.  The homeopathic aconite was a darned good idea -- I would probably have added hypericum (homeopathic -- a really low dose)

How about Traumeel?  That's going to help healing -- particularly if there was some trauma that occurred in the wind.

    2.  Do you have a homeopathic vet?  Homotoxicology would honestly be my first preference for healing

To find someone who does homotox in your area hmtx is the letters to look for.  If you haven't heard of it, feel free to ask.  it's a pretty cutting edge new way homeopathics are being used.  Incredible results.

    3.  My other suggestion would be TCVM -- Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.  Acupuncture/Chinese herbology -- might help you do this without the pred (or less of it)

http://www.tcvm.com -- there is a locator on the left you can use by state or zip code.  If you are out of the US there is a sentence link below that will list other countries for you.

Good luck -- it's scarier than it is harmful usually.  If you can find Similisan eyedrops at your health store, those are homeopathic and really nice to use.  Easy applicator and very gentle.

Thanks Callie!  I do have a homeopathic vet and she recommended Causticum 30C 2-3 times per day for a total of 6 doses.  (the book says Caus 6X   4 times day for 5 days)...I think I was too late on the Aconite as that is effective within 24 hours or so of exposure to wind etc.  I think he had it for up to 10 days before he got worse to the point of drooling.   I   knew something was wrong last week and I thought he looked dehydrated so I was going to take him in for bloodwork.  When I noticed the drooling 2 days ago and it struck me that maybe he had a stroke....so I called the vet to get him in and they were booked so I called my oldtime vet who diagnosed him over the phone and phoned prescriptions doxy, prednisone and eye ointment to use to coat his eye for protection.   My homeopath wants give the Causticum a chance to work, and I think he slightly blinked, not 100% twice tonite.  I am blinking his eye manually and massaging his face.  I do not want to do the prednisone but I read it will help the inflammation of the nerves.  Yes, I thought of hypericum as well.  According to my vet, Causticum is widely used for this.  And she does acupunture as well.  My old vet thought that Lyme Disease may have triggered it and Red is Lyme positive, so he prescribed doxy.  He alreadry had a month course of doxy 4 years ago for lyme.  I will get a 3DX test to see how positive he is testing.

Never heard of traumeel - I'll look it up.

Oh and Callie, my vet said this is prevalent in cocker spaniels.  Red is a mix and he may have spaniel in him.
