Pro-Biotic Question

    Pro-Biotic Question

I was just wondering if probiotics can go bad or lose their effectiveness.  I had to go searching today for some and found some at a place we don't usually go.  All they had were sample packs and they are marked best before Nov. 2007. (Forti-Flora)

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Absolutely they can go bad -- probiotics are "good" bacteria -- and have to be 'live' to do anything.

Forti-flora is made by Purina (yep, the dogfood people) -- it's actually a good probiotic, but I wouldn't use it THAT out of date for sure.

It's one of the few that doesn't have to be refrigerated -- and most probiotics "die" easily if not handled well.

That's exactly what I figured! Thought I'd ask just to make sure though.

It was kind of a funny story really.  I ran out of probiotics for Tessy and went to get some from the vet but they were out.  I decided to check at a couple of the other vets in town and I ended up going to a "new" clinic that just opened up in April.  Anyhow, I went back this LONG road and ended up at this driveway that said to follow the signs.  I ended up at his house with a sign saying "Clinic This Way" pointing to an old barn!  The whole while I'm thinking...Oh my....what am I getting myself into here.  This looked like a refurbished old cattle barn.  Anyhow, I went in the door and low and behold the place looked really nice.  I asked the lone person if they carried canine probiotics and sure enough they had some.  She went to the back for almost 25 minutes....the whole time talking with me and asking about my dogs and Tessy and the whole "anemia" thing...yada yada yada.  Finally, she came back with 30 pouches in a bag.  I could tell from a distance the packs didn't quite look the same as what I usually get so when she handed them to me I noticed all the expire dates were marked out with a marker!  I asked her if they were still "in date" or good and she said yeah.  I never even took notice that the packs said "Samples only".  She couldn't find a price on them so she ended up just giving them to me.  I wasn't going to buy them anyways due to the date not being on them.  When I got out to the car I could barely see the date on them!  Couldn't believe it!  And this is a new"er" place!

Anywho, while I was originally waiting (I suppose she was marking the dates off them) I was pumping the questions to her about the equipment she uses for testing and her familiarity with IMHA.  She's only ever seen a few cases (she's younger so I figure not that experienced).  The one thing I liked was the fact that she hand counts the CBC as well as uses an analyzer.  Yeah....I like to see vets that'll actually take the time to look at blood under a scope and manually count.  Another good thing was that her equipment will show Retic numbers....as well as much more info on the chem panels....including Lipase, which our current clinic doesn't.

All in all it was quite the experience!  Still not sure what to think of her.  I grabbed a card on the way out in case I ever want to go there for anything.  Of course I was in a rush so I failed to ask for her prices!  :(

I don't know if I should take Tessy there to compare results or not....it would just be a one time deal or only when certain numbers are needed.

OH....she was going to give me a probiotic for horses.  I wasn't too sure of these so I passed on it.

LOL....she also said barn used to raise beef!  Found it kinda ironic!  The place used to kill animals and now it saves animals!

I've used Fastrack as a probiotic (refrigerated) .  I prefer the powder so I can just sprinkle it over the dogs' food.  I can't vouche for this distributor, but here's one place you can find it: http://www.revivalanimal.com/store/p/6747-Fastrack-Canine-Gel-Powder.aspx?feed=GoogleProductSearch&gdftrk=gdfV2457_a_7c543_a_7c1841_a_7c140
