Dyan this sounds so much like the issues MANY swissy owners and some other large breed, deep chested dogs on our sites and at our venues talk about and expierence often as young dogs and less as adult dogs. We call it the "lickies" cause our dogs lick and lick and lick everything in a tortured type way. I don't think nauseous either its more gas realated. When River was a puppy he had every test there could be ran and he had no apparent issues, between myself and the Swissy owners I know we have spent much money on a diagonose and no one has one yet. It is a common subject amongonst us breed owners. I have heard of Danes and Boxers from time to time with this issue.
All I can say is that what we have found is maintence helps. Preventative antacides like Beano before meal or Pepcid, gasx after meals - etc., changing foods until one works the best, adding fiber like missing link helps for some, confindment so they don't eat everything in sight. River would eat rocks when he is having an episode - anything he can put in his mouth and eat he does! One of the common factor's in Swissies appears to be stress related after a meal so confidment and calmness for an hour after a meal helps.
Good luck Dyan and I hope Gibby finds some relief.
Thank you! Its always good to hear about others that have the same problems. I know I presented these problems to the people on the Dane forums..and a few on each came up with some similar problems. First of all....those darn Danes...they look so big and so strong..... well they are big and they are strong...but they are not the strongest healthwise dogs in the world, maybe that is true of pure breeds in general. Never thought about those deep chested breeds having these problems...but your right..maybe thats another thing about them besides bloat.
Gas related..... thinking he rarely has gas as in.....uh hem..... stinky gas....lol! But,,,I keep him on probiotics and that would help to get rid of gas in his system. When I get gassy though....it kind of makes me sick to my stomach..... but I was thinking acid reflux and in fact they kind of said the same thing that it happens more to younger dogs than older ones, which I would think opposite of. But its also very interesting that you mention stress related in the Swissies...because the more I see of it, the more I think that is true. You know I always worked up until the last few months...I haven't been around as much to see whats going on in his world sometimes when he is having issues....would depend on my DH to tell me.....THATS about as good as Gibby telling me...if you know what I mean!!!! And as you said changing food to find one that works.... that is exactly what I am trying to do. I stuck with Eagle Pack becasue it was always known to be so good for the giant breeds....so I wouldn't let go of it....but NOTHING is good for EVERY dog.... so I am trying to find something that will work. I know I did not give California Natural a fair shake..... but if only I could have gotten it at a store that would return it if it didn't agree with him as Pet Supply Plus does. I might eventually give it another shot if I go back to kibble....
The last two days he is doing great! No incidents at all....and no Pepcid either after giving it to him for almost a month. He is off dog food now...and maybe that is why ...maybe not. Again...he does this on and off so there is no way to know for sure. But thanks again for telling me about your River...its good to know that someone knows what I am talking about.
