Manuka honey

I haven't tried it, nor would I try it. 

I use only local honey for our dogs.  Shooter is an allergy dog, & his dermatologist was quite clear that I should only use raw, local honey.  The way he explained it was that the pollen in the honey is in such small parts that it is ingested by the dog without a reaction.  As time goes by, it, supposedly, helps build up a tolerance to the pollen.  He said that you use only local honey, so that you are exposing him to only pollens that are in his enviroment.  He also said that using other honey could expose him to pollens from other places, & that in itself might cause his skin issues to get worse. 

I'm honestly not sure how much of this is true, & how much is just speculation, but I figure that he went to school to specialize in dermatology, & he has no stake in what honey I buy, so I go with his suggestions.

I also don't really care for the fact that it claims to "treat" many different conditions, yet I can find no legitimate medical studies to back up these claims.

Call me cynical, but it just looks like overpriced honey to me.

And it IS expensive isn't it.  Just came across this today when researching acid reflux in dogs. But at work ( at our vet clinic ) a few months back a client told me that to get rid of bouts of diarrhea in her dogs..she gives them local honey. I started checking out what people say about honey back then and bought some for the heck of it.  Can't hurt.     But just today I came across this and its the first I heard about it.

Does make sense about the local honey and allergies.

That's all true -- it's the closest to a natural "homeopathic" that there is -- the minute amount of pollen in the honey that stays IN there after it's packaged simply prods the body to respond.  It doesn't overwhelm -- but as a sugar it zooms straight to the bloodstream and the body identifies that pollen as a potential "allergen" -- sort of as "You need to DO something about this!" 

The exposure to other allergens is again no joke --

But the big deal with manuka honey is that it supposed to have antibacterial properties -- like it's touted for things like MRSA (you literally put it ON the wound).  The biggest places I've heard advocate it are places that SELL it.  That isn't usually a good thing to me.

They also advocate it for stomach ulcers.

The slippery elm cocktail recipe that I've posted before DOES work (and it's from my vet) -- if you're thinking for Gibby's stomach it would be far far less risky and for the $38 PLUS shipping that the honey would cost you could make about a ton and a half of the slippery elm cocktail and have it overwith.  (the slippery elm cocktail is liquid aloe, chlorophyll liquid, slippery elm and acidopholus).

But reading a lot about regular honey this past summer...they say all these things about it also. Its just they are claiming this has EXTRA SPECIAL properites.  Not sure that I believe any of it at all...but I did go and buy real local honey for my DH and Gibby both.  Just for the fun of it....I got it out and am giving some to Gibby. 

No Callie...I'm not thinking about buying it at all. Its just that I have an interest in honey to begin with...but came across this while researching acid reflux in dogs. Just wondered if anyone used it or had experience with it.   Gibby is fine.....he just goes thru his little spells once in a while, I am trying to see what I can do about that.

 We use Manuka for ourselves.  I get coldsores often in the winter and Active Manuka honey clears them up within a day or two.  I also take one spoonful a day and it clears up my stomach.  We have used Manuka on Talus' "funky" nose. We don't want to give him any more antibiotics than necessary and our vet says Manuka is great for it.  But it must be Active Manuka honey to work. (Regular Manuka honey that you can buy at the grocery store has no medicinal purposes.) We use the MGO 400+...& I use the one with Glucosamine for my arthritis...works amazing...
