What would YOU have done?

I think I would of done exactly what you did, Dyan.   I certainly under no circumstances would I induce vomiting without consulting a vet.  I haven't been comfortable with some of the stories I've read on here.  It seems like now that the word is out on how to do it everyone is doing it for every little thing.

I thought it altered it for the better though?  That and blood sugar?? Callie, PM me if you have info.  Thanks

Like others have said before,  Hydrogen Peroxide is a fail safe for dogs who love to eat. With my Rhodesians I keep several bottles of UNopened HP around. It looses it effectiveness quickly once opened. I rubber band an oral syringe to each bottle, I have them in the cars, the RV, and every bathroom in the house.  You simply fill the syringe with the fresh HP and shoot down the dog's throat.  It may take one or two syringes to insure the dog will vomit.

YES YES YES. I have a huge sealed bottle in with the *dog supplies* - not the first aid stuff where it might get used by a human - with a syringe banded on. I also labeled it with instructions for Pirate's weight on a piece of masking tape. I do the same thing with liquid Benedryl in the spring/summer since Pirate is allergic-ish to bee stings and I like to be prepared.

I think it was Bugsy's mom that said you guys with the BIG doggies might need to use a turkey baster instead, ROFL.

I'm glad he seems OK today, Dyan!

Gibby is fine,,,at least for now.  He has eaten his regular meals all day..and is acting 100%. I'm thrilled.

You know....if we didn't have a house full of company yesterday I might have worried faster. BUT when he did it, I was mad at him but only was really happy that he didnt' seem to get any of the regular chocolate fudge....only the white.  I figured he might not feel great...but never even figured I had to worry.     UNTIL I got into bed several hours later. Then it hit me that I wished I had called the ER vet to see what they had to say about the whole thing.  I did pretty much figure that it was way to late to think about making him vomit so many hours later. Plus....he did vomit after drinking all the water....which might just be the thing that got me started worrying.  He almost never drinks much water...so the fact that he did made me think he doesn't feel very swell.

Our Open House started at 3, he was so good most of the day.  I know he is not trustable around food.....so I didn't even want to have the food in the kitchen...but in the end I brought it there so that I could watch it and him.  He was just on the ball for a second more than I was.

Well I guess Gibby is fine.....

I say I guess because she is eating and all...but keeps having these spells of swallowing a ton.  It looks like he wants to throw up but is swallowing......but he does this once in a while...it scares me. He was trying to look for grass to eat too....he tried to eat some dried ornamental grass outside and some bushes....there is tons of snow and no grass.  He has tried to eat some plants inside.   Not sure what is going on. Yet....he wants to eat his food.  In fact when he gets these swallowing things I a lot of times give him some bread or crackers....    and I did. He hadn't attempted to throw up a thing...but gets these swallowing spells......and it looks like it scares him too.   I gave him a couple of Tums because likes them and when I try to give him Pepcid he won't eat them unless I hide them in something.

He ate all three meals.....and inbetween these spells he is playing,,,or sleeping.  Don't get it.  But it probably has nothing to do with the fudge he ate.

Glad he is fine!  Not sure what I would have done - I dont' think I'd induce vomiting for Bugsy (same weight) for that

Yeah...I think the key words are "for that!"   Again, had it been the regular chocolate side of the plate he ate it would have been a complete different story. I would  have called ER immediately at that.... and worked from there.   Since it was white.... and the circumstances were that everyone was talking about "thank God he didn't get the regular chocolate side" and all............I wasn't horrible worried until much later when we all went to bed...and I had lots of time to worry.   As in ALL NIGHT!!!!

He IS fine today. And yesterday when I said he was swallowing really hard in what looked like spells, and trying to eat plants and all,  well...I can't believe it but eventually he was laying and sleeping and got up and started coughing......and a whole leaf from one of my plants came out and landed on the floor....    Here....he was being a "bad boy" in the morning, bugging DH while he was trying to read the paper and DH yelled at him to go lay down.....on his way past the plant he took a bite.  I bet that leaf was stuck in his throat and THAT is what was causing the problem. Ever since that leaf landed...he was totally fine.  What a bad boy he is....lol!

First thing I'd have done is to CALL the vet and ask about whether to induce vomiting.  If the answer was yes, I would do it.  If not, I would follow instructions on what to do next.  In the absence of a vet or 24 hour vet, I would contact the animal poison control center, and if all the phone lines were down, I would go ahead and induce vomiting (since chocolate is not a caustic substance).  Or, I might even follow the advice of a vet friend of mine who told me to feed one teaspoon of whiskey to my dog (a Beagle who had eaten a whole pound of Hershey's kisses that my roommate left out when I wasn't home).

And, I know you already know this, but I would take Bevo's advice;-)))

I would not have induced vomiting given what he ate, the size of the dog, and the other risks involved with inducing vomiting.

I have induced before but like Amanda said, it was a life/death thing.  Nikon ate rat poison when he was 12 weeks old.  I induced vomiting immediately and then called the e-vet, who told me to keep doing it until no more blue came out (poison was blue).  I called multiple vets that night and they all said I didn't even need to bring the dog in, since I'd induced vomiting within 10 minutes and got all the poison out, that's all they would have done.

I do not use the hydrogen peroxide on every little thing though.  My dogs have eaten sticks, large chunks of shoes, full sticks of margarine, piece of bone they shouldn't have, etc.  Kenya recently splintered and ate a cooked rib bone before I could get it all away from her.  In these cases I put the dog on crate rest and watch them to make sure they poop over the next 24 hours.  When Kenya ate the bone, I gave her some bread soaked in water for some "padding".

I have only induced on Kord twice in 3 odd years. The first time was when he was a puppy and got to the litter box while it was being changed and ate clumping cat litter. The second time was when he snagged something with plastic wrap on it and inhaled it.

Glad Gibby is doing better. Oh and Dyan, Kord gets an Altoid mint every night before bed. He LOOOOVEEESSS them.

Altoids (the regular NOT the sugar free version!) areone of Emma's favorite treats, too, LOL. We always munch on them at dog shows.

Yeah we get the wintergreen regular. And trust me, Kord is not shy if you forget, he knows which drawer they are in and has no qualms about reminding you.

I tried a mint doggie toothpaste awhile back.  And, you would of thought I'd given her poison.  She started sneezing and drooling and she was making faces.  It was ridiculous!
