    OMG - Jamison . . . . . Deb W.

So I get home from my Xmas party yesterday and walk into a house covered in vomit.  I let Jamison out in the back yard and start to clean up - he eats grass for about a half hour then comes in and drinks an entire bowl of water.  10 minutes later, he scratches at the door to go back out where he repeated the grass eating and water drinking.  So I know something is not right and I call the vet, and she said bring him right in.  So, they did xrays - no blockage but his stomach and intestines are severely inflamed.  They tested for pancreaitis (sp???) and that came back negative, thank God.  So now he's on anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea medications and we are waiting for the results from the blood tests.  He had to have an IV of fluids because he was so dehydrated.  So how does a dog go from being his normal self to being so sick in a day???  Do any of you guys know what would cause this????  I'm so worried about him.

I'm glad there's no blockage!! Is there anything he could've gotten that would cause this? Check the cabinets for missing food or something??

I hope its nothing serious!! Jamison, you get better now! Lots of get well vibes coming your way!

Deb, I'm so sorry to read this.  I don't really have any ideas except maybe a houseplant that's poisonous (if you have any).  Or maybe there was some human pill he got a hold of?  I'm just throwing those out there.  I hope you get some answers very soon.  Gentle scritches from me for Jamison.  (((Hugs))) for you.

Oh, Deb so sorry to hear about Jamison.  Thankfully his pancreas came back OK, Sammy's only vomiting issues were due to the pancreas values being all out of whack.

I too would check for something he got in to -- Sammy climbs the counters so even things on top of the fridge. Or it could be something he got into on a walk or something.  It could be meds, plants, food, literally anything, but could you see anything identifiable in the vomit that would indicate what it might be?

Regardless, Jamison, I hope you are feeling better soon buddy!  I hope some meds and some rest will help.

I checked the house over pretty well while cleaning up all the vomit . . . . and really didn't see anything out of whack.  The only thing I'm thinking is maybe a dropped pill or something small that I wouldn't see.  The vomit was all white foamy bile.  He wanted water sooooo badly last night, but my vet said to only give him a sip or two.  He stood by where we keep his water bowl for like an hour  . . . . I just feel so bad for him.

RC sends her "red dawg" vibes to Jameesun to get well soon!

Usually I'd say overeating/eating something rotten or such, with a hound...but if the trash wasn't fooled with...no dead critters around...hmm. Hope he is 100% very soon!

Ok - even one regular strength Tylenol can cause kidney failure in a smaller dog.  This doesn't sound like that, but that's just an example.

Xylitol can kill -- to be honest I don't even chew gum with xylitol in it for that very reason.

Chocolate -- can really wreck them.  Not only can it make them nauseus and absolutely insane, it trashes the liver big time.  (Literally in the body chocolate is converted to a substance VERY like cocaine in their body.)

I've got a huge hunch here based on prior experience ----

I'm going to say blockage.  DON'T LET THEM KID YOU -- an x-ray does NOT rule out a blockage.  NOT AT ALL.  Because fibers (like cotton fiber or paper fiber) do NOT show on an xray.

I had a friend with a little old poodle come up with symptoms very very like this.  They thot pancreatitis at first (because of the intense inflammation of the stomach/intestinal tract goes along with it -- and heinous diarreha and vomiting). -- They were over a week trying to figure it out and finally they had an ***ultrasound*** done and THERE IT WAS.

Someone had stored a hammock on a porch he had access too. This dog was *not* a chewer so it wasn't something she expected.  But apparently before that hammock was "stored" someone had spilled food on it and Cedar chewed it.  He ingested enough cotton fiber to obstruct himself and it was NOT seen on an x-ray.

The fact that he ate grass for half an hour tells me he was TRYING to make himself throw up.

Honestly?  I would tell them to cut to the chase and have an ultrasound done.  Now depending on equipment it might be way cheaper for you to go to a vet school.  But don't let this go on and on because it's debilitating.  If he throws up EVERY thing he eats and he drank an entire bowlfull of water and was STILL DEHYDRATED?

That says *****BLOCKAGE**** to me in big huge blinking letters.  And an x-ray can *not* rule that out.

My friends couldn't believe  Cedar was blocked -- it was a dog who never chewed nuffing -- BUT once they did surgery (and see an ultrasound tells you **RIGHT THERE** is where it is) and she saw the fibers in her hand she said "THAT'S THE HAMMOCK".

They nearly lost Cedar because they spent too long trying to reduce the inflammation with the object still in there.    But I learned my lesson -- there are TONS of things that won't show on an x-ray.  And a dog that drank an entire bowl of water and then was still dehydrated?  Nothing is getting thru the body.

edited because I can't spell this morning.
