    Which of these three

Oh my....after all of these years of Eagle Pack....I think I am going to change Gibbys dog food.    He just isn't gaining the weight I think he should...and has had problems with his touch tummy ( even though he's been really good lately ) but I'm thinking maybe it time. He is 17 months old...and I am feeding him 3 times a day to try to get his weight up a bit...and he just leaves it outside more.

Took quite a few hours out and searched the Internet and then went to a few feed stores.  So far between them all..... I am thinking Blue Buffalo, California Naturals or Natural Balance.     Moneywise....the best deal would be California Natural where I can get a 30 or 33# bag for $40 at one store.... do you believe down the street from it is another store selling the same bag for $55.     I do have to go and get a small bag and make sure he doesn't get sick from it...............but I need to start somewhere and I am confused.

Any thoughts on these three foods?

Given the sensitive tummy issues, I'd probably lean toward CA Natural because it's a very simple, yet good, food.  My parents feed their Rottie mix CA Natural and he does very well on it; it's been in our rotation as well and the dogs do well on it when we use it.

He's 17 months already???  How much does he weigh, I'm curious how big he is.

I think he might like either the California Natural or the Natural Balance.  Can he have fish?  Willow did really well on the Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish for some time.  And, they've got other simple formulas now so you'd could rotate if you wanted.

The Blue I never tried because I'm afraid of those "bits" they put in that they would bother her.

For a sensitive stomach, I'd pick a food with the least amount of ingredients, which would probably be California Natural. The benefit of Natural Balance though is that their ingredients are very controlled - for example, the animals that they get their meat from are not fed antibiotics. They have very high quality ingredients that stay the same batch to batch, which can go a LONG way for a dog with a sensitive stomach.

My choices in order would be:

California Natural, Natural Balance and then Blue Buffalo

Natura's quality and quality control are top-notch in the industry IMO, so one of their foods is always going to be my top pick when it fills a particular dog's needs.

After all that went on after the big pet food recall, I'm not crazy about Natural Balance's quality control at all.  But one of my dogs does great on their potato and duck food, so we go with what works.  I keep my fingers crossed that NB learned from their mistakes and has instituted better QC measures.

Blue Buffalo has good ingredients, but way too many of them for me to seriously consider it for a dog with a sensitive tummy.

Well moneywise, it would Natural Balance, if you purchased it at Petco. But add in a sensitive tummy and I'd be more inclined to use California Natural first, then Natural Balance.

I know its more expensive but have you tried Evo to get his weight up?

    • Gold Top Dog

Thanks for your help friends!  You know.......your all right so what was I thinking? He does have a sensitive tummy and I should get something will less ingredients.

You know....I'm really stupid because a while back I was thinking with him tummy and all I should think about changing food..but because he has been good lately...I kind of forgot and am thinking just about his weight.  Duh!  You guys are right...I think I will go buy the C.N. I just don't know much about any of these companies being such a fan of Eagle Pack. I do remember problems at Natural Balance once...but I do think they are a good company and I would think they HAVE learned from it.

My only thing is that the one thing I have liked about EP is the glucosamine and its only in the BB.... or senior formulas of the others...which he is not.

I'm not into thinking that I really want to put Gibby on Grain free, and I believe Evo is.

Lori...yes....Gibby is getting older...YIKES, actually 19 months old now.   He weighs about 102 or so....kind of a lot like Bubblegum...has that same slim figure. However...Gibbys spine is quite showing... and he eats a lot more. I actually feed him 3 times daily to keep weight on.

    • Gold Top Dog

If I remember right, EP is around 300 kcals per cup.  Blue is over 500, but I don't remember on the others.  So, check those kcals when you buy something so that you are not feeding too many kcals.  I really liked Blue Wilderness for Thunder when we were up North.  He tends to start looking anorexic in the winter time but with the Wilderness, he held his weight.  It isn't grain free really, because they do use oatmeal in it.  That's supposed to be kind to touchy tummies.

NB is pretty pricey, but it's a good food.  It, or CA Natural should work well for mr touchy tummy.

Lori, those bits in Blue are the lifesource bits.  They're just cold processed vitamins, minerals and antioxidents....kind of like a super duper multi vitamin.

What about using California Natural to help his sensitive tummy and then add toppers to his food to help his weight??

    • Gold Top Dog

See, maybe it's just me, but I have a real issue with having to do that.  I think Dyan does add toppers, but just the idea that the food isn't "enough" bothers me.

What about using California Natural to help his sensitive tummy and then add toppers to his food to help his weight??

Yes...Glenda is correct. I DO add toppers...to one meal at least...the last one.  I used to give him ( and Bubby and Ollie ) egg in the AM but with Gibbys touchy tummy I went from raw egg to cooked egg to no egg....but might start again.

See...............my problem is not that I think the food I choose isn't good enough....because if I did think that I would not choose it. But..... seriously...I have a problem with ANY kibble....somehow I can't see it as being food...so I add some.  Sad

Glenda.....you know I do like those little additions to the Blue......but I think it is probably correct to go with the food with the least ingredients and see what happens from there. Besides its the best $$ value for me at this point.

Well I did go buy California Natural Chicken and Rice Formula. I went with that formula because when I gave him lamb in the EP... ...it caused problems. NOT sure it was the food...but I had to return the bag, wasn't fooling with it. So decided not to even try it now.

I was sooooo stupid because the store that I bought it from said they would not take back an open bag ( boy am I spoiled with PSP that DOES return food if the pet can't tolerate it )  if it doesn't agree with Gibby...so I bought a smaller bag also.  That way I don't have to go back to the store and get more yet. However I got home and realized how really stupid I was and wasted a lot of money.  The 30# bag was $40.  The 5# was almost 10. Duh.  Oh well.

Now I wish I would have also checked the *** VanPattons roll food...since I really don't think that great about any kibble.  HHHmmm.   I guess I could go back to the drawing board on that one, since who knows.... mabye this C.N. won't do well for him.

California Natural has worked wonders for us. Ari's got a touchy stomach (by touchy I mean at this point we don't bat an eye if she goes on a vomit/diareah spree unless she's not eating and doesn't clear up within a couple of days). Ari couldn't tolerate some foods because they were too rich. She's also very active and keeping weight on her is a concern. She has done very well on all their varieties, except the fish one. That produced the most foul, biggest bowel movements Ick! and gave her bad gas.

Hi Dyan, just wanted to mention that those food rolls contain lots of organ meat.  And, some dogs, like mine, end up with diarrhea if they eat too much organ meat at once. Willow loves those rolls. But, she ends up a mess.

So, just thought I'd mention it since Gibby has a sensitive system too.

LOL, us either Sharon!!  Heck, the vet doesn't even bat any eye now.  I've got the meds on hand.  And, only need to go in if it doesn't resolve in 24-48 hours.  Or, she seems sicker or like it's something out of the norm.  I don't know whether to feel flattered the vet trusts me to make these decisions or pathetic!!
