Wanting to try a Dremel

I'll never go back to clipping nails now that I have a dremel. I was also always afraid of cutting the nail to short. I got my dremel for $20 at wal mart, Probably the best 20 bucks ive ever spent. Ive had it for forever and it still works great. I think I got the medium-ish sized one? Baileys nails are thick, black, and grow like weeds. I usually dremel his nails 2 times a week, just a little bit at a time, and it keeps them nice and short.

I agree. Rupert does so much better with the Dremel than with clippers. I took it slowly and followed the advice on this site:

 Spazzy, what brand was it? Is it that one that they show on TV? Also since Simba is only a pup I know he'll be getting bigger so should I like get a smaller one for now or just get like the medium one? Not exactly sure how big he'll get since he's a mutt...

I have this one.  I love it.  It fits in my hand very well, & it's been very durable.  The battery life is great.  (I can dremel all eight dogs with one charge.)

We dremel twice a week, & everyone's nails are nice & short.  I would acclimate Simba to it slowly as it can be a little scary at first.  We make nail time lots of fun with treats & toys as rewards.  My guys like seeing the dremel come out because they know that they are going to get something good out of the deal.

 I have the same one as Amanda, and LOVE it.  I'll never go back to clippers now that I have the dremel.  The dogs' nails are so easy to keep up with it.  Just make it super fun, and introduce slowly.

Oh that's not a bad price for all of the attachments you get with them!  Wow 8 dogs, you must be in heaven! I'd love to have that many dogs. :P Yeah I would do that, I don't want him to freak out. Should I start by just laying it out and letting him sniff it?

The one they show on TV, isnt a dremel, its just a rip off. Everyone I know who has one has said it doesnt work that well. For small dogs it might be ok, but for thick nails it just isnt powerful enough.

I dont have the exact same one as Amanda, but its similar. Mine was less expencive. Maybe mines an older model? I think its 4.8 V. It works great for Baileys nails, so much better than a clipper. Not sure how long my battery lasts, because I only have to do Baileys nails, but im sure it would last a while because I dont have to charge it too much.

Thats what I did with Bailey. First I just let him get used to the dremel. Then I had him lay down and i touched all his toes with the dremel while it was still OFF and gave him treats at the same time. Then i let him get used to the sound of it being on (not touching his feet, just standing near it when its on) It was the sound of it that really freaked him out. Once he was ok with the sound i started doing just one nail a day and lots of praise after. We progressed pretty fast to doing all of his nails in one day because he used to be horrible at the vet so I worked hard on having him be calm when he feet/ears/mouth were being touched, so it didnt take long for him to get comfortable with it. But how long it will take depends on the dog.

If you look at janobono's post (Rupert's mom) and click on the link she provided and look on the left you can click on "how to dremel".  This was very helpful to me when I started doing my dogs nails with the dremel.  It is easy but I would recommend you look at this site to learn the dos and dont's. :)
